TV Icon Betty White Gets Her Own USPS Postage Stamp

As a longtime fan who grew up with Betty White gracing our screens, I can wholeheartedly say that her absence leaves a void that no other actress could fill. Her humor, charm, and undeniable talent were not just a part of American television for eighty years, but they were also a constant source of comfort and joy in my life.

Betty White was an irreplaceable gem to our nation, and her absence leaves a void that can hardly be filled. For more than eight decades, she wove herself into the tapestry of American television. Tragically, she passed away just weeks before her 100th birthday in 2021. Although she’s physically gone, her memory will live on. It’s not only because you can catch reruns of The Golden Girls on cable TV, but also due to the announcement by the USPS that White will be honored with a postage stamp next year. The image they are using is the same one found on the cover of her biography, captured by photographer Kwaku Alston.

Betty White frequently received between hundreds and thousands of personal fan letters every week, making her one of the TV stars most likely to receive a dedicated postage stamp from the USPS. This recognition seems particularly fitting given that she typically received the bulk of her mail during the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s plausible that people, now spending more time at home due to the pandemic, rewatched classic shows like The Golden Girls, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, or any other series in which White appeared. Her calming presence provided comfort during turbulent times, and this comfort was especially appreciated during the pandemic.

Next year, Betty White won’t be the only cultural icon to receive a USPS stamp; Allen Toussaint from New Orleans will also be honored. The Postal Service has revealed that more significant figures will receive stamps in the coming months. However, we can’t help but suggest postage stamps for Bea Arthur, Estelle Getty, and Rue McClanahan as well. If one Golden Girl from Miami deserves it, so do the rest, in our humble opinion.
