TUSK LOVE Easter Egg Arrives on THE MIGHTY NEIN Series

Fans of The Mighty Nein have been eagerly waiting for this, and it’s finally here! The in-universe romance novel, Tusk Love, has made an appearance. Many consider this to be the most anticipated Easter egg from the series. Tusk Love is incredibly popular within the Critical Role universe – it started as a running joke in the original Campaign 2, became a real-world book fans could purchase, and now shows up in episode six of The Mighty Nein animated series, “Many Gifts.”

Wow, that’s a pretty big deal for a simple romance novel! As a fan, I’m sure all the Jesters are thrilled. But as someone who loves Critical Role, I was really curious about that Tusk Love Easter egg in The Mighty Nein. So, let’s dive in and break down exactly what it was all about.

Tusk Love Appears More Than Once in The Mighty Nein Episode 6, Doing Justice to This Fun Easter Egg

In the sixth episode of The Mighty Nein animated series, the group finally arrives in Zadash. Fans of Critical Role will recognize Zadash as the location of Chastity’s Nook, a bookstore famous for its, shall we say, spicy romance novels. While Chastity’s Nook isn’t explicitly named in the animation, Jester is shown visiting a fully-stocked bookstore and picking up a copy of Tusk Love as the Nein walk through town, bringing this fun reference to life on screen.

After discovering the book, the team needs to find a suitable gift for Nathan Fillion’s character, known as “The Gentleman.” They hope to exchange the gift for another protective amulet for Caleb, preventing his former assassin colleagues from locating him. Molly suggests they need something elegant, and Jester believes Tusk Love would be perfect. In the The Mighty Nein animated series, Jester initially describes Tusk Love as a passionate romance between Oskar and Guinevere.

Tusk Love IS a Sophisticated Gift After All

Ultimately, Tusk Love proves to be surprisingly helpful to The Mighty Nein, going beyond just a playful inside joke. The Gentleman isn’t interested in Molly’s wine or Beau’s fancy goblet, but he’s immediately captivated by Jester’s offering of steamy romance novels. He and the Nein agree that Tusk Love is a delightfully scandalous story of secret love! The Gentleman even acknowledges Jester’s excellent taste, though he asks for something in return for a protective amulet. It appears that without Tusk Love, the Nein wouldn’t have been able to move forward with their mission.

We really enjoyed how Tusk Love’s album cover was recreated in The Mighty Nein animated series. We’re hoping to see an official animated universe version released soon!

Tusk Love in Critical Role Campaign 2, The Mighty Nein and Other Critical Role Role Properties

Fans of Critical Role will immediately recognize this Easter egg! For those who need a reminder, “Tusk Love” first appeared in episode eleven of Campaign Two, titled “Zemnian Nights.” (You can watch the full episode below.)

Just like in the animated series The Mighty Nein, Jester is drawn to this romance novel while browsing Chastity’s Nook, the popular bookstore in Zadash. The book, Tusk Love, frequently appears throughout the campaign and even made a cameo in the Legend of Vox Machina animated series—though with a slightly different cover!

During Campaign 2 of Critical Role, the character Jester frequently references Tusk Love, an orcish romance novel. She draws parallels between the book’s relationship and her own developing feelings for Fjord, a half-orc. Fans anticipate Tusk Love will appear as a fun nod in the upcoming animated series featuring The Mighty Nein, particularly as Jester and Fjord’s romance grows.

Read The Mighty Nein‘s Tusk Love in Real Life!

If you enjoy stories about secret romance and passionate connections, especially between characters with contrasting personalities, you’ll be happy to know you can now read the full novel Tusk Love. This book, created by author Thea Guanzon with inspiration from the Critical Role character Jester Lavorre, is actually real! We at TopMob even have a sneak peek you can read right now, detailing the first encounter between Guinevere and Oskar – and it’s quite intense.

“Tusk Love” is a sweet and charming romance about Guinevere, the polite daughter of a rich trader, and Oskar, a distant half-orc. Though Oskar seems cold at first, he’s actually courageous and kind, and unlike anyone Guinevere has ever known. Guinevere, despite being somewhat sheltered, helps Oskar discover a gentler side he’s always kept hidden. As they journey together, their feelings deepen, and they must decide whether to follow their hearts or pursue their original goals.
