Trump and Musk Meet With Milei

As a seasoned crypto investor with a keen eye for economic trends, I find myself intrigued by the bold moves of President Milei in Argentina and the potential implications for the United States. Having navigated through several market cycles and witnessed the rise and fall of various economic ideologies, I’ve learned that change is often the only constant in financial landscapes.

At a celebration held at Mar-a-Lago, Milei conveyed his congratulations to Trump, stating that the election results showed “heaven’s forces” were on their side. He also noted that “the winds of freedom” became even stronger following Trump’s victory.

In a speech given in both English and Spanish, libertarian figure Milei voiced his criticisms towards tax systems he believes are used as forced means to redistribute wealth. He additionally praised Elon Musk, who is now heading the Department of Government Efficiency under Trump’s administration, highlighting X, Musk’s social media platform, for its significant role in potentially saving humanity.

Beginning his term in December 2023, President Javier Milei has launched a set of actions to shrink Argentina’s government. These steps align with his libertarian beliefs, focusing on limiting government involvement and promoting financial prudence. It seems that Trump and Musk are preparing to adopt similar strategies within the U.S. context.

Reduction of Government Ministries

Among Milei’s first steps, he aimed to simplify the executive branch by decreasing the number of departments from 24 to 8. This reorganization involved either abolishing or combining significant departments such as Education, Social Development, Women’s Affairs, Gender Equality, and Health. This action was a part of his broader plan to minimize bureaucracy within government and decrease public expenditure.

Public Sector Workforce Downsizing

To align with his pledge for fiscal responsibility, Milei’s administration dismissed thousands of government employees. By July 2024, roughly 25,000 public servants had been let go, and another 2,500 to 5,000 contracts would not be renewed by the end of June 2024. The administration focused on positions considered unnecessary or superfluous, aiming to cut down on waste in the government sector.

Deregulation and Economic Reforms

Milei enacted Decree 70/2023, a detailed set of rules affecting 366 different areas within the economy. This decree brought about major changes, like altering labor laws to lower severance pay for dismissed workers, enabling employees to select their own healthcare providers, and eliminating rental price caps. Furthermore, it converted state-owned businesses into stock companies, exposing them to the same risks as private entities, including the potential for bankruptcy.

Fiscal Austerity Measures

To tackle Argentina’s long-standing budget shortfall, Milei enforced strict cost-cutting policies. This involved significant reductions in government spending, primarily in sectors like education, infrastructure, and social development, amounting to approximately one-third by October 2024. Consequently, these actions led to the country experiencing its first fiscal surplus in more than a decade.

Privatization Initiatives

The Milei government initiated steps towards the privatization of state businesses in an effort to minimize government control over the economy. Specifically, they planned to sell Aerolíneas Argentinas, our national airline, as well as Intercargo, a publicly-owned airport services provider. These actions were intended to cut down on public spending and foster competition within the aviation industry.

By implementing extensive changes, President Milei has substantially minimized the scope of Argentina’s government, mirroring his aspiration for a streamlined administrative body and a more market-oriented economy. Could this approach be adopted by the U.S. in the future? On today’s X show, Vivek Ramaswamy, head of D.O.G.E., expressed, “We’re not wielding a chisel; we’re using a chainsaw.
