Summary
- Tropical Futures Institute (TFI) and Eastern Margins collaborated on a special capsule collection drawing from Asian underground culture, diasporic identity, and tropical regions.
- The collection, described as “built for heat” and “styled for the margins,” features items like a sarong and bike jersey, encapsulating DIY aesthetics and rave art from East and Southeast Asia.
The Tropical Futures Institute (TFI), founded by Chris Fussner and known for its tropics-inspired designs, has teamed up with Eastern Margins to create an exclusive collection. This partnership is driven by their shared passion for Asian underground culture and the exploration of diasporic identity. The duo, with TFI being based in Miami and Eastern Margins being recognized as the “hub of Alternative Asian culture” in London, aim to introduce a fresh aesthetic that blends digital culture, Drain Gang influences, and tropical motifs.
The team behind it refers to the assortment as “designed for warmth,” “originating from tropical regions,” and “inspired by fringe styles.” This set includes a pink infant tee, a co-branded bike jersey, a graphic t-shirt, an embroidered trucker cap, and a sarong. Each item embodies the visual essence of DIY craftsmanship and rave art prevalent in East and Southeast Asia.

In this setting, the sarong stands out, drawing inspiration from a traditional garment commonly worn in tropical Asian cultures, which serves as the base for Bea Cruz’s “tropical drainer” design. Meanwhile, the bike jersey showcases an airbrushed vintage floral artwork on the back and eye-catching font on the front.
The Tropical Fashion Initiative (TFI) was established by Chris Fussner in 2017 to address a perceived gap in studies of contemporary culture in tropical regions, with a focus on the Philippines and Southeast Asia. In a recent update, Fussner explained that TFI’s goal is to showcase various artistic and design expressions from these areas, connecting them through art, design, and research. Many people might recognize TFI for their collaboration with Denim Tears, which made the “LATE CAPITALISM” graphic, now widely seen on hats and shirts, well-known.
Initially unveiled at Dover Street Market Singapore, this exciting collaboration has now found its way to the TFI online store! Take a peek at the images in the gallery above, skillfully captured by Khristiandt Lerona, for a sneak peek into the campaign.
