Tron Franchise ‘Put to Rest’ After Jared Leto ‘Ares’ Flop

After the disappointing performance of Tron: Ares in theaters, a source at Disney says the studio is putting the Tron series on hold, likely for the foreseeable future.

Regarding the future of Tron, a source from DisInsider stated that while the series isn’t finished for good, there are no current plans to continue it in the near future.

Disastrous box office

That statement effectively confirms what many expected after Tron: Ares’ disastrous box office.

The new movie, costing $220 million to make and featuring Jared Leto, earned only $73.16 million in the United States and Canada during its opening weekend.

The film hasn’t performed well internationally either, with worldwide earnings totaling around $142.2 million. This result positions it as one of Disney’s biggest science fiction failures in recent years, potentially losing the studio around $300 million.

Tron: Ares Fails to Reboot the Grid

Disney hoped Tron: Ares would revive the Tron franchise after the 2010 film Tron: Legacy, but the project has been canceled. Although the movie boasted impressive special effects, a soundtrack by Nine Inch Nails, and a promotional campaign that included partnerships with Tesla and displays of the iconic Light Cycles, it failed to attract an audience.

The film received mixed reactions. Critics found it stylish but lacking depth, and many fans weren’t convinced by Jared Leto’s performance. Initial audience scores weren’t strong, with a B+ CinemaScore and only 57% of viewers saying they’d recommend it. It currently has a 54% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and while audiences gave it an 84% score, overall reception appears to be only moderately positive.

The result? Disney is reportedly cutting its losses and putting Tron on ice.

Questions Now Surround Masters of the Universe

The situation also brings questions about what’s next for Leto, particularly his role as Skeletor in the upcoming Masters of the Universe movie, which also stars Nicholas Galitzine as He-Man.

Travis Knight’s new film is currently set to come out in June 2026. However, after the performance of Tron: Ares, some industry experts are questioning whether audiences will be interested in another expensive fantasy movie starring Jared Leto, considering his last two films didn’t do well at the box office.
