Transformers Replaces Optimus Prime With Elita-1 As New Leader

After Robert Kirkman reimagined the character Tech Jacket with a different gender in Invincible, it’s now revealed in his Transformers comics that Optimus Prime has stepped down as leader of the Autobots, and Elita-1 has taken his place.

The latest issue of Skybound’s Transformers (#30) concludes with Optimus Prime passing on the Matrix of Leadership to Elita-1. This transforms her into Elita Prime, and she becomes the new leader.

Optimus drops the “Prime”

The issue also makes clear that Optimus drops the “Prime” title after surrendering the Matrix.

The Energon Universe is undergoing a significant change, and this time it’s permanent – it’s not a feigned death or a temporary setback in a fight.

Optimus Prime steps down as leader after Elita-1 questions his choice to continue defending Earth rather than going back to Cybertron.

Rather than continue the fight, he hands over the Matrix, and the Autobots split into two sides.

Elita-1 Is Now Elita Prime

Elita believes Optimus is prioritizing Earth over the Autobots’ original goal of restoring Cybertron, according to recent reports.

Following their conflict, Optimus realizes his decisions might be hindering the Autobots’ fight. He gives up the Matrix, and Elita is subsequently upgraded to become Elita Prime.

Some Autobots decided to travel to Cybertron with her, but others remained on Earth with Optimus Prime.

This leaves the Autobots divided: Elita Prime now commands one group, while Optimus remains on Earth, stripped of his official title and without the Matrix of Leadership.

Fans Are Calling Out The Name Change Problem

The change is also getting attention from fans online for another reason.

A fan on X recently noted that if Optimus Prime is no longer a Prime, many fans believe he should revert to his original name, Orion Pax. This is because Orion Pax was his identity before receiving the Matrix and becoming Optimus Prime in the established Transformers story.

That complaint taps into a bigger issue some readers have with the new direction.

The issue isn’t simply Elita-1 taking over as leader. The comic seems to remove the ‘Prime’ designation from the character without exploring what that change should signify. It feels like the writers either aren’t knowledgeable about the established backstory, or they’re deliberately ignoring it in favor of prioritizing diversity.

Robert Kirkman Is Steering The New Era

The current Transformers comic book series, published by Skybound, is now being written by Robert Kirkman, the creator of The Walking Dead and Invincible, with artwork by Dan Mora beginning with issue #25.

After IDW Publishing lost the rights, Skybound Entertainment teamed up with Hasbro to publish Transformers and G.I. Joe comics. Robert Kirkman has played a key role in developing the overall Energon Universe.
