‘Transformers’ and ‘G.I. Joe’ Crossover Movie Gets a Massive Update From the Producer: “we’re going to have to figure out how to create that room”

As a seasoned gamer and die-hard fan of both G.I. Joe and Transformers franchises, I can hardly contain my excitement as the long-awaited crossover movie finally seems to be on its way! Since the initial whispers back in 2013, I’ve been eagerly anticipating this clash of titans.

After the conclusion of ‘Transformers: Rise of the Beasts’, it has become clear that two of Hasbro’s most popular franchises share the same universe, hinting at the possibility of a future crossover film.

The idea for a ‘G.I. Joe’ and ‘Transformers’ crossover movie has been brewing since as early as 2013. Back then, Lorenzo di Bonaventura expressed his enthusiasm for such a film, and director Jon M. Chu followed suit by expressing interest in July of the same year. However, the project appeared to be on hold in June 2014, and it was initially intended to debut at the end of ‘G.I. Joe 3.’ Ultimately, Paramount chose not to proceed with this plan.

By July 2021, di Bonaventura firmly believed that a crossover was unavoidable, even though Paramount showed reservations. The idea of a crossover started gaining momentum with ‘Rise of the Beasts’ in June 2023, connecting the storylines of both franchises. It was made official at CinemaCon 2024, and Derek Connolly was brought on board to pen the script in June 2024.

Lately, Collider had a chat with di Bonaventura and discussed the specifics of the franchise’s future. The exciting bit is that the upcoming live-action film will indeed be the cross-over movie mentioned earlier. However, it’s worth noting that many aspects hinge on the outcome of ‘Transformers One’.

Indeed, if all goes well, we’ll move forward with a follow-up to this project. There’ll also be an independent animated spinoff. Meanwhile, the next live-action film will feature a blend of characters and stories from different series.

The newfound knowledge about the emotional capabilities of robots will significantly impact our approach. Consequently, we need to design an environment where these abilities can thrive financially, and craft a narrative that maximizes their potential.

One aspect I’m eager to explore further, even though our plans are still under development and subject to change, is enhancing the robots’ roles in live-action settings. This approach seems crucial as it allows us a deeper insight into their characters.

The film is still being produced, and di Bonaventura emphasizes that finding the balance between the G.I. Joe and Transformers franchises will be crucial. This involves determining the optimal mix of Joes and robots so that the storyline cohesively integrates both elements.

To ensure that each character’s motivation is integral to the overall narrative, we must delve into their driving forces. However, this task proves challenging due to the sheer number of characters often found in franchise films. The more characters involved, the tougher it becomes to create and develop a multitude of compelling personalities.

We need to persist, keep things streamlined, and maintain a focus on minimizing for the time being. This means we’ll be working on a combination of regular individuals and transformative elements (like Joes and Transformers), which is where we find ourselves currently – in the stage of setting up a larger structure or system.

In our discussion, the key lies in striking the right blend, which can be likened to: ‘Just how much Joe should we keep, and how much Transformer essence are we aiming for?’
