A fresh piece of gossip indicates that Robert Kirkman might be planning to bring his Energon Universe comics to life through an animated television show. The venture is said to be a contemporary reimagining of the iconic 1980s Transformers and G.I. Joe cartoons.
A report emerged on Reddit suggesting that Kirkman, famously associated with “The Walking Dead” and “Invincible”, might unveil an animated adaptation of this news at San Diego Comic-Con towards the end of this month. If substantiated, the upcoming series would revamp the renowned Hasbro brands by integrating Kirkman’s comic book continuity, which began last year under his Skybound publishing label.
Kirkman’s Energon Universe
Kirkman and Skybound are creating a revamped version of the Transformers and G.I. Joe universes, offering novel backstories and merging the franchises within a single interconnected universe. Their comic book series encompass Void Rivals, Transformers, Duke, and Cobra Commander, with more titles in the pipeline.
The buzz surrounds the latest news that Robert Kirkman will commence penning the twice Eisner Award-winning comic book series Transformers, beginning with issue #25, slated for release in October.
The comics are widely praised for their ability to blend nostalgia with a contemporary, character-focused style, gaining both fan and critical acclaim. Additionally, Kirkman’s participation lends credibility, as his past work on Invincible demonstrates the potential for an animated adaptation to expand a comic book franchise.
No Official Word Yet
Currently, there’s no official confirmation about an animated series from either Robert Kirkman or Skybound. But considering Comic-Con is happening between July 25th and 28th, it wouldn’t shock us if they made a big announcement at one of their panels.
What About the Live-Action Transformers and G.I. Joe?
It’s been speculated that the animated Energon Universe might be coming soon, while news about live-action Transformers and G.I. Joe franchises is also circulating. Previous reports indicated that a crossover movie between Transformers and G.I. Joe could still be in production at Paramount. There are rumors suggesting Michael Bay might return as director for this project, with five projects reportedly under development altogether.
The upcoming live-action “Transformers” movie is anticipated to carry on the narrative from “Rise of the Beasts,” hinting at a common universe between Autobots and G.I. Joe. As of now, there’s no confirmed release date, but it’s known that Hasbro and Paramount consider this project to be significant.
It’s expected announcements will happen once the Paramount and Skydance merger is finalized.
