(TRAILER) Popeye Returns To Haunt a Group of Friends in a Summer Samp in New Slasher ‘Popeye’s Revenge’

It seems Popeye has now joined the public domain, which means we’re bound to see a low-budget horror movie adaptation. This time around, our spinach-guzzling sailor is taking on a new role as a terrifying slasher antagonist, following in the footsteps of Winnie-the-Pooh and Peter Pan who have previously been reimagined in this manner.

The movie named “Popeye’s Revenge” follows the trend of transforming beloved childhood characters into terrifying specters. Intrigued? Or perhaps you can’t help but watch? A sneak peek is available in the form of a trailer that has been released.

The movie “Popeye‘s Revenge,” as ITN Movies puts it, presents a chilling twist on the traditional character of Popeye. However, the term “horrifying” used by ITN might not entirely capture their intended meaning. Instead of being scary in the conventional sense, the film is unsettling because it resembles the horror classic “Friday the 13th,” with Popeye portrayed as the antagonist.

This movie chronicles a group aiming to establish a summer camp, but their plans are disrupted by the ghostly tale of Popeye. If this premise rings a bell, it’s likely due to the same creators who brought us Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey and its subsequent installment.

In my humble opinion, “Children of the Night,” helmed by director William Stead, offers an intriguing take on the cinematic landscape. The film boasts impressive performances from Kelly Rian Sanson, Danielle Scott, and Danielle Ronald, all familiar faces from the “Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey” series. Interestingly enough, Steven Murphy takes on the role of a twisted interpretation of Popeye, a character who, one might guess, still draws his power from that trusty can of spinach.

This movie isn’t part of what’s commonly known as the “Twisted Childhood Universe,” encompassing titles like “Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey” and “Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare.” However, it maintains a similar atmosphere. Additionally, some recognizable names from behind the scenes are involved, suggesting that we can expect more horror adaptations along these lines in the future.

As a passionate cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that the much-anticipated flick, “Popeye’s Revenge,” is now up for grabs! You can catch it right away by streaming it on-demand. It’s available exclusively for rental or purchase on Prime Video. So, grab some popcorn and enjoy the show!

Popeye, a character who first emerged in comic strips back in 1929, swiftly earned widespread recognition. Throughout the decades, he graced the screen in various theatrical shorts, but it was his animated TV series that truly captured hearts in the early 60s. The show ran for an impressive 220 episodes from 1960 to 1962, ultimately cementing Popeye as a cultural icon. In fact, the character transitioned to live-action in 1980 with Robert Altman directing the movie “Popeye,” featuring Robin Williams as Popeye himself, Shelley Duvall as Olive Oyl, and Paul L. Smith as Bluto.

It’s uncertain how long audiences can endure more public domain horror movies without asking for copyright modifications, but for now, they continue to be released. However, there’s a chance that Popeye’s Revenge might buck the trend. At least it lasts for just 79 minutes, so if it doesn’t impress us in any other way, at least it won’t outstay its welcome.
