Kodansha, the famous Japanese publisher known for popular series like *Akira*, *Attack on Titan*, and *Sailor Moon*, is trying something new: its first manga created in the United States. Called *The Escape*, the series is a collaboration between social media personality Vinnie Hacker, author Shakira Pressley, and manga artist Hiroto Oishi.
Kodansha has announced that *The Escape* will begin releasing digitally on October 8th. Japanese readers can find it on the Comic Days platform, and it will be available worldwide for free through Kodansha’s KManga app.
Enkei is a prisoner in a brutal underground arena where inmates are forced to battle each other to the death. Burdened by guilt over past killings, he decides he won’t take another life, a choice that sets off a dangerous series of events that could lead to his salvation or his downfall.
To celebrate the manga’s launch, a new animated trailer for *The Escape* is being posted on Hacker’s social media channels – YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok.

This new manga is part of Kodansha’s larger effort to share its stories and creators with fans around the world. In 2023, the company launched the KManga app to get titles to English-speaking readers faster, so they don’t have to wait as long after a manga is released in Japan.
Kodansha is partnering with companies like Netflix, Lionsgate, Sega, and Roblox to broaden its reach and bring popular series—including *Blue Lock* and *That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime*—to more fans through interactive experiences.
With *The Escape*, Kodansha is taking a significant step by expanding its creative projects beyond Japan. Featuring the involvement of [Hacker’s name] and already gaining attention, this manga has the potential to redefine international partnerships in the industry. It’s great to see Kodansha championing creators outside of Japan and delivering new stories to readers worldwide.
