One of the greatest, most beloved franchises in movie history is back for its fifth big screen installment, and it’s truly a meeting of old and new. Toy Story pitted an old toy against a new one. Now Toy Story 5 is pitting old toys against new tech. But this time the fight isn’t about which one of them will be a child’s favorite. It’s about doing what’s best for Bonnie, as a flashy screen is the last thing she needs. Here’s the official synopsis from Pixar:
As a huge fan of the Toy Story films, I’m really intrigued by the latest premise! It seems Buzz, Woody, Jessie, and the whole crew are facing a new challenge. This time, it’s not a new kid, but a tablet named Lilypad who’s arrived on the scene and thinks she knows what’s best for Bonnie. It really makes you wonder if playtime will ever be the same for them – it’s a fascinating setup!
The new trailer reveals that Woody, voiced by Tom Hanks, will be back with the gang despite saying goodbye at the end of Toy Story 4. He answers the call to adventure – though he’s looking a little less fluffy these days – and quickly falls back into his familiar dynamic with Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen). Many other beloved actors are returning as well, including Joan Cusack, John Ratzenberger, Wallace Shawn, Annie Potts, Keanu Reeves, and Tony Hale.
The cast also includes Craig Robinson as Atlas, a friendly, talking GPS hippo. Shelby Rabara will voice Snappy, an enthusiastic camera toy, and Scarlett Spears will play Bonnie. Conan O’Brien joins the cast as Smarty Pants, a device designed to help with potty training.
The film is directed by Academy Award winner Andrew Stanton, known for WALL•E and Finding Nemo, and co-directed by Kenna Harris (Ciao Alberto). Critically acclaimed composer Randy Newman returns for his fifth collaboration on a Pixar film.
