Tori Spelling recently explained why Hilary Swank was no longer part of Beverly Hills, 90210. Swank, now 51, was a key character named Carly Reynolds during the show’s eighth season, but she departed after only 16 episodes.
Tori Spelling, 52, talked about Hilary Swank’s time on Beverly Hills, 90210 with Jennie Garth on their podcast, 90210MG, last Friday, November 21st. She said Swank was originally hired as a regular cast member but ultimately felt the character wasn’t developed enough in the scripts.
Spelling didn’t feel the writing was strong in the first episode of the eighth season, and Garth shared that opinion.
I have to admit, I was surprised by what another podcast producer, Amy, had to say. She initially felt Hilary Swank’s performance wasn’t quite hitting the mark, but after revisiting the episodes, she did a complete 180. It wasn’t Swank’s acting at all, Amy realized – the problem was with the writing itself, which made it tough to really connect with the character.
She clarified it wasn’t a matter of the actress’s talent. ‘She is good,’ she explained, ‘but the writing for her character was just over the top. From the very beginning, the character was portrayed as unpleasant and unlikeable.’
Amy pointed out that being fired from the show ultimately benefited Swank’s career. It allowed her to audition for other projects, including the role in Boys Don’t Cry that eventually won her an Oscar. As Amy explained, “She was able to get Boys Don’t Cry because she became available to audition after being let go from the show.”
In a 2024 interview with Guy Raz, Hilary Swank opened up about being let go from ‘Beverly Hills, 90210.’ She confessed she felt disheartened at the time, thinking she wasn’t good enough for a show that had already had its peak with Luke Perry. However, Swank later realized it was a fortunate turn of events. She explained that having that door close allowed her to receive the role in ‘Boys Don’t Cry’ just two months later, proving the importance of trusting the process when opportunities end.
