Top 5 Most Awaited Action Sequels Like Rush Hour 4, Red Notice 2 & More

As a dedicated follower of Hollywood news and movie sequels, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement and anticipation with every new announcement that hits the scene. With the success of action movies being at an all-time high, it comes as no surprise that we’re seeing so many sequels in development right now.

In today’s Hollywood, action movie sequels are highly sought-after and significant due to their popularity. It is only natural that successful action films lead to follow-ups, a trend fueled by the entertainment industry’s affinity for franchises and engaging narratives. Evidence of this can be seen with numerous action sequels currently being developed in Hollywood.

1. Violent Night 2

In simpler terms, the 2022 Christmas action film “Violent Night,” featuring David Harbour as Santa Claus, was a massive box office success. Following its huge popularity, discussions about a sequel have been ongoing since its release. Producers Kelly McCormick and David Leitch have confirmed that pre-production for the sequel is underway, with Universal expressing confidence in expanding it into a franchise. During SXSW 2024, they shared their enthusiasm behind the scenes, including from David Harbour, who is eager to reprise his role as Santa. Despite some scheduling hurdles, multiple script drafts have been completed, and filming for “Violent Night 2” could begin in early 2025.

2. Rush Hour 4

For years, there have been great anticipation among fans for the release of a fourth Rush Hour movie. In 2018, Chris Tucker confirmed that the project was underway, and Jackie Chan approved the script in the year prior. As of now in 2022, they’re still fine-tuning the script, with Tucker mentioning it as an upcoming venture in 2023. Warner Bros. has yet to make a formal announcement regarding the film, and it seems unlikely that Brett Ratner will be directing due to past controversies. Regardless, progress continues to be made, and both Tucker and Chan remain enthusiastic about the project.

3. Red Notice 2

As an obsessed fan, I can’t contain my excitement about Red Notice shattering Netflix records during its debut in 2021 and paving the way for two sequels! Netflix’s Head of Film, Scott Stuber, confirmed that Red Notice 2 is under development with a near-completion draft. However, Hollywood strikes have caused some delays. Regardless, Stuber aims to kick off production for Red Notice 2 in late 2024. The script for Red Notice 3 is still being worked on, but Deadline previously reported that both sequels could potentially film back-to-back. So, let’s keep our fingers crossed and stay tuned for more updates on this thrilling adventure!

4. Gunpowder Milkshake 2

At the 2021 Cannes Film Festival prior to its premiere, it was announced that a follow-up to Gunpowder Milkshake is in the works. Since then, there have been limited updates on the production of Gunpowder Milkshake 2. Neither StudioCanal nor Netflix have denied its development. The original film was released on Netflix and in select cinemas in 2021, becoming a top hit on Nielsen ratings during its debut week. While the financial success of the first film is uncertain, its popularity indicates it may have generated enough revenue to warrant a sequel. No information has been disclosed regarding the cast for the upcoming production.

5. Top Gun 3

In early 2024, Paramount Pictures revealed plans for a Top Gun sequel, titled “Top Gun: Maverick 2,” following the record-breaking success of the previous installment in the franchise. This announcement came after a long wait of 36 years between films. During an interview with Screen Rant in March 2024, producer Jerry Bruckheimer disclosed that director Joseph Kosinski was working on a new story concept for the sequel, potentially involving the return of stars Tom Cruise, Glen Powell, and Miles Teller. The next phase involves Cruise’s approval of the script and scheduling his availability for filming, which could take some time due to his current engagements.
