Top 25 Best Anime Ninja Girl Characters Revealed!

Shinobis, a significant element in Japanese culture, frequently grace the screens of anime productions. Though often portrayed as male figures, numerous outstanding female characters also embody the role of shinobi within this realm of animation. These exceptional females are commonly referred to as kunoichi.

In this piece, we’ll be listing and rating our top 25 favorite female ninja characters from the world of anime, giving you insights into their origins and backgrounds.

25. Seraphim

Franchise: Is This a Zombie?

Seraphim, often called Sera, is an exceptionally skilled vampire ninja, adept at wielding the katana. It’s evident that her primary focus is mastering Tsubame-gaeshi, as nearly every aspect of her life revolves around it. Initially, there were plans for her to petition Eucliwood, but these requests were consistently denied by Eucliwood.

As per her orders, she’s meant to stand by Eucliwood as a servant, but this role was rejected by Eucliwood since she was already served by Ayumu. When Seraphim finds it difficult to get rid of Ayumu, she chooses to serve Ayumu instead.

Yet, contrary to her role as a servant, she exhibits a sharp wit, often addressing Ayumu disrespectfully as “Kuso Mushi”. Despite this, it seems she shares living quarters with Ayumu, and can mysteriously appear throughout the house at inconvenient moments, resembling a ghostly presence.

24. Kagero

Franchise: Ninja Scroll

Born and raised in the Koga clan, Kagero has been a trained kunoichi from her childhood. She currently holds the position of the Mochizuki clan’s official Poison Specialist for their chamberlain. Due to the frequent consumption of poisons as part of her duties, Kagero’s body has developed an unusual resistance to such substances and, in a strange twist, now carries poison within herself. As a result, anyone who shares a kiss or engages in intimate relations with her will suffer a lethal poisoning.

Through a combination of factors, including her upbringing and certain experiences, Kagero views herself as insignificant and often puts her life on the line in combat. This reckless behavior leads to conflicts with Jubei, a vital character from Futaro Yamada’s work, The Kouga Ninja Scrolls.

23. Suma

Franchise: Demon Slayer

In the captivating world of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, I play a pivotal role as a supporting character named Suma. As a kunoichi, I’m not just any ordinary female ninja; I’m also one of Tengen Uzui’s esteemed wives. During our mission to explore the bustling entertainment district, my duty was to masquerade as an oiran, or high-ranking courtesan, at the Tokito house.

However, amidst the intrigue and danger that filled the air, I found myself losing contact with Tengen Uzui during our investigation. Now, I’m left hoping that he’s safe and that we’ll reunite soon to continue our crucial mission.

As Tanjiro secretly enters the Tokito residence, he listens to whispers suggesting that Suma eloped with a rich admirer. Yet, he instantly questions whether something more ominous is at play. Later in this storyline, Inosuke Hashibira embarks on a hunt for the demon and finds himself in a cave where an abandoned obi dangles above several trapped individuals.

As he launches his attack, he successfully frees numerous prisoners, among them Suma and Makio. These two ladies valiantly safeguard the liberated captives from recapture, while Inosuke engages the obi in combat. Suddenly, a deafening peal of thunder resonates within the cavern, and Tengen emerges through the ceiling, severing significant portions of the obi. He expresses his pride towards the women, which deeply touches them emotionally.

22. Goemon Hachisuka

Franchise: The Ambition of Oda Nobuna

Goemon Hachisuka is a youthful ninja girl who once studied under Kinoshita Hideyoshi. Following his demise, she pledged loyalty to Yoshiharu. As their leader, she commands a band of militia willing to lay down their lives for her. Her voice has a childlike quality and she sometimes stutters, making her uncomfortable during lengthy discussions.

In my perspective, her diminutive size makes her an exceptional secret agent, effortlessly slipping into secure locations with surprising swiftness and silence. She’s not just a small package; she’s proven her mettle in combat, standing her ground fearlessly on numerous occasions. Moreover, her lightning-fast reflexes have saved Yoshiharu’s life on more than one occasion.

21. Hanabi Hyūga

Franchise: Naruto

Hanabi Hyuuga is Hinata’s younger sibling, who is considered the potential successor of their clan. At a tender age, she demonstrates exceptional skill in employing her family’s martial arts methods. In a unique episode, we witness her deep admiration for her elder sister when she was young and looked up to her as an inspiration. However, this adoration diminished somewhat upon realizing that Neji surpassed her in strength.

After leaving town with her father, away from the invasion by Pain and Konan that struck Konoha, she rediscovers her respect for her elder sister when she finds out about her valiant battles against Pain. Since she was still young, she was not involved in the war and instead remained safe within Konoha.

20. Hinatsuru

Franchise: Demon Slayer

In the series Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Hinatsuru is a secondary character who is also known as a kunoichi, married to Tengen Uzui. At some point in their past, Hinatsuru, along with Makio and Suma, were taught by their husband Tengen his personal beliefs: prioritizing their own lives, then the lives of honorable people, and finally himself.

Later on, I found myself privately questioning this concept, as it contradicted my training as a kunoichi. Hinatsuru reassured me that if I was comfortable with it, Tengen would endorse the idea too. Additionally, she hoped that once we had defeated an Upper Moon, we could withdraw from the front lines as a team.

In her suspicion that the entertainment district served as a cover for the Demons, Hinatsuru disguised herself and her companions as oiran to infiltrate it. Assigned to the Kyogoku House, she soon discovered that Warabihime, the principal oiran, was actually a Demon. Unable to act against her, she chose to consume poison to be expelled from the house. Yet, instead of being released, she was bound by a mysterious belt that would instantly eliminate her if she attempted anything suspicious.

19. Anko Mitarashi

Franchise: Naruto

As a die-hard film fan, let me recount my perspective on Anko Mitarashi’s intriguing backstory. Hailing from Konohagakure and sharing the same educational path as Team Minato, Anko Mitarashi was an exceptional kunoichi with a unique twist to her tale. Under the tutelage of Orochimaru, she found herself on a team that would irrevocably shape her destiny.

In the midst of their mutual affection, Orochimaru bestowed upon Anko some of his groundbreaking research. This seemingly benevolent act unknowingly set in motion events that would lead to a grim outcome – Anko was the lone survivor among ten subjects who were subjected to the Cursed Seal.

However, this catastrophic ordeal did not leave Anko defenseless; instead, it endowed her with an array of abilities related to snakes, which became her unique arsenal in the world of shinobi.

After Orochimaru departed from their village, Anko felt remorseful about the events that transpired and sought to absolve him of his wrongdoings. At the outset of the storyline, she was a boisterous and assertive special-grade Jonin and the overseer for the second phase of the Chunin Examinations. In the conclusion, it’s disclosed that Anko was eventually discovered, now working as an instructor at the Academy, and had also gained significant weight.

18. Sarasvati

Franchise: Is This a Zombie?

Sarasvati, or simply Saras, is a unique character who combines the traits of a ninja and a vampire. She is the oldest among her kind and resides in the human world under the guise of Kirara Hoshikawa. Known as Lovely Kirara, she maintains a dual identity as a well-loved singing idol. In the human world, she has been tasked to eliminate Eu, who seems to be a magnet for Megalo. However, Saras ultimately sets up Sera for execution due to disobeying orders.

In due course, Saras saves both Saras and Haruna from Yoruno. Subsequently, she renounced her assassination plan as her faction and Mael united to close the gates to the underworld (even though Sera was instrumental, given he had Eu’s blood in his veins after Yoruno inflicted a fatal wound on him).

Ultimately, she finds herself enamored by Ayumu. At their initial encounter, she felt an immediate attraction towards him upon noticing his physique and figure; however, this blossomed into a deeper, more conventional love over time.

17. Makio

Franchise: Demon Slayer

In the series “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba,” Makio serves as a secondary character. She is identified as a kunoichi, and is among the wives of Tengen Uzui. Initially, she enters the district undercover, working as a courtesan at the Ogimoto residence. Her mission involves gathering intelligence about rumors of a demon in the area, which she discreetly communicates to Tengen through a crow messenger.

One day, Makio finds himself ensnared by Daki’s belt (obi), promptly subjected to questioning. Later on, Inosuke stumbles upon a hidden bunker and swiftly cuts the obi, liberating both Makio and Suma from within. The two women then assist Inosuke in rescuing the trapped girls, preventing them from being swallowed up by the obi again. Upon meeting up with Tengen in the cave, Makio and Suma are released themselves, ultimately orchestrating the evacuation of the residents living nearby.

After successfully evacuating citizens, Makio and Suma return at the battle’s end to discover its aftermath. Upon reaching their comrade Tengen, Makio and his wives attempt to administer first aid, but the antidotes fail against Gyutaro’s poison. Overwhelmed by their predicament, they ponder a solution until Nezuko steps forward, using her powers to heal Tengen. The women erupt in joy, showering Nezuko with affectionate kisses.

16. Sarada Uchiha

Franchise: Naruto

Sarada Uchiha is the child born to Sasuke and Sakura. She seems to have taken after both parents in various ways, exhibiting traits like her mother’s exclamation “Cha!”, as well as her father’s tendency towards indifference, a habit of not readily acknowledging or praising people, even when they truly deserve it.

In the story “Naruto: The Seventh Hokage and the Scarlet Spring,” Sarada is the main character who is on a quest to find her father who was separated from her during their early years. Despite this, she harbors a sense of disconnect as she believes that she and Sakura are not blood-related. After acquiring the Sharingan in a significant event, Sarada initially has a strained relationship with her father Sasuke. This tension escalates when she wrongly assumes that she might be Karin’s biological child due to their shared eyewear, leaving her feeling hurt and deceived.

15. Yukikaze Panettone

Franchise: DOG DAYS

Known affectionately as Yukki, Ella serves as a loyal and independent knight in the Biscotti Order of Knights, working alongside Countess Brioche d’Arquien. As the deputy leader below the Countess, she is part of the Onmitsu Brigade within the Knights of Biscotti. To her, every member of this squad – whether a canine or fox companion – holds a special brotherly bond.

From our first encounter, Cinque and I found an instant connection that’s grown into deep affection – it’s clear I hold him dear. Yukikaze, in the heat of combat, dances with grace and agility, wielding a versatile arsenal from her fists to bows, swords, and tantō. My admiration for Lady Brioche is profound; I respectfully call her “Oyakata-sama,” an archaic term reflecting the reverence I feel for her noble status in our world of old Japanese traditions.

Towards the finale of the initial season of the anime, it’s unveiled that Yukikaze is none other than a fox spirit who has covertly collaborated with Brioche d’Arquien for more than a century. Their mission? To keep demons at bay and maintain tranquility in Flonyard by sealing them off.

14. Misao Makimachi

Franchise: Rurouni Kenshin

Makimachi Misao, who is around 16 years old according to Watsuki, yet appears younger than that intentionally in the drawings, is not your typical young woman. Despite counsel urging her to settle down and live a conventional life for a girl, she remains steadfastly committed to the ways of a ninja. Her heart belongs to Shinomori Aoshi, and after he departs from Kyoto, she embarks on a lengthy journey in search of him, encountering Himura Kenshin along the way before eventually returning home unsuccessfully.

Following the news that Aoshi joined forces with Shishio Makoto, Misao steps forward as leader of the Oniwaban-shu and teams up with Kamiya Kaoru to assist Kenshin in handling one of Shishio’s subordinates known as Honjo Kamatari. Subsequently, Misao takes part in a rescue operation to free Kaworu from Yukishiro Enishi’s island stronghold. Afterward, he makes his way back to Kyoto accompanied by Aoshi.

In my fandom excitement, I’d like to share a fascinating insight about one of my beloved characters, Misao, from Watsuki’s masterpiece. He designed Misao with as much cheerfulness as he could muster, and she turned out to be an intriguing blend of Kaworu and Myojina Yahiko. In terms of her physical appearance, Watsuki deliberately chose to draw her long hair in a braid, believing it conveyed a sense of dynamism effectively.

Interestingly, Misao was Watsuki’s favorite character, seeming so real and autonomous, almost as if she had a life of her own, independent from the author’s creative decisions. Yet, despite his deep affection for her, he admitted that he felt he didn’t quite capture the essence of a strong, independent woman in Misao as fully as he would have liked.

13. Hikage

Franchise: Senran Kagura

A young woman, raised since childhood as a cold, emotionless instrument of destruction, wields a mid-sized knife that she often moistens with her tongue prior to battle. In combat, she summons a venomous cobra using the ancient art of Ninjutsu.

12. Oboro

Franchise: Basilisk

Oboro, a striking young woman, is the granddaughter of Ogen Iga. Known for her youthful and sometimes immature demeanor, she is one of the ten ninja warriors chosen by Ogen to confront the Kôga clan. In the future, she is betrothed to Gennosuke Kôga until a peace treaty between their clans was breached.

She may not excel at any ninja technique, yet her eyes can seemingly dismantle any such technique. Longing for harmony between the two ninja factions, Oboro endeavors to reconcile them so she could coexist with Gennosuke. However, once the truce is violated, the rival clans swiftly descend into a lethal conflict, where love seems inconsequential.

They, her comrades from the Iga clan (Akeginu, Rôsai, Nenki, Tenzen, Hotarubi, Jingorô and Koshiro), chose not to tell her about the renewed conflict between the two clans immediately. Her innocence and affection for Gennosuke made it possible for the Iga ninjas to defeat four members of the Koga clan before she discovered what had actually happened.

11. Mei Chang

Franchise: Fullmetal Alchemist

As a dedicated cinema enthusiast, I’d rephrase that as follows: Hailing from the mystical land of Xing, I am Mei Chang, accompanied by my diminutive, adorable panda companion, Xiao Mei, who seems to mirror my every action. Much like Lin Yao, I carry the title of the seventeenth crown princess in our royal lineage under the watchful eye of the Emperor of Xing. Upon entering the vibrant town of Youswell, it was kind-hearted Kayal who chanced upon me, weary from my journey.

Mei Chang may appear quite young, yet his proficiency in elixirology – the Xing’s alchemy focused on medicine – is beyond question. Pursuing eternal youth, she believes Edward, known as an exceptional alchemist, could be her savior. Hence, she embarks on a quest to find him, viewing Edward as a sort of fairytale prince charming.

10. Kaguya Ōtsutsuki

Franchise: Naruto

Kaguya Otsutsuki is a key character from the Otsutsuki Clan, serving as the primary antagonist in the Naruto series. Unlike other members of her family, Kaguya chose to isolate herself from the world by consuming a divine fruit from the Tree of Life, effectively merging with the tree while also utilizing it and Rinnesharigan to cast the Infinite Tsukuyomi over the world, aiming to bring about its ultimate destruction.

Instead of being admired as the “Rabbit Goddess,” Kaguya became increasingly enamored with her divine powers, eventually losing trust in humankind. She transformed the humans absorbed by the Divine Tree into her personal army of White Zetsus, a defense against her Eastern relatives and other malevolent acts she inflicted upon the powerless people. This led to Kaguya being seen as a “Demon” by those who suffered under her rule.

9. Soi Fon

Franchise: Bleach

In Chinese, Soi Fon translates to “Fast Wind.” She serves as captain of the 2nd division of the Gotei 13 and commander of the 1st division of the Omnitsukido (Keigun, the division of executors). Previously held by Shihōin Yoruichi, these roles are now under Soi Fon’s command. Her actual name is Shaorin Fon, and she belongs to a lesser noble family that serves the Shihōin clan, one of Soul Society’s four powerful families.

In a family of six, she’s the sixth child; tragically, all five of her brothers perished during their initial missions. It was upon joining the Keigun that she adopted her great-grandmother’s first name, Self. She harbored strong resentment towards Yoruichi for deserting her (particularly for not bringing her along on her escape), and dedicated herself to outdoing her in training.

During the assault on Sōkyoku, they’ll stand opposite one another, and once the battle concludes, she will vocalize her anger towards Yoruichi, thus putting an end to the animosity she harbored against her.

8. Tsubaki Nakatsukasa

Franchise: Soul Eater

She’s the companion of the Star of the Night (Black Star), differing from other demonic weapons due to her ability to assume multiple forms. These forms include grappling hooks, shurikens, smoke, ninja blades, and decoys. She is the inheritor of the renowned Nakatsukasa clan, a lineage known for their unique capacity to transform into various shapes.

Unlike her partner, she is gentle, considerate, and somewhat timid due to Black Star’s unpredictable and self-centered nature. Despite this, she remains intelligent and thoughtful, taking care not to belittle him or make him feel small. She acknowledges his abilities and encourages his growth, but often finds herself outmaneuvered by his free spirit.

In the realm of anime critique, I must express my thoughts on an intriguing development: Having absorbed Masamune’s spirit, our protagonist now undergoes a remarkable metamorphosis in her Cursed Saber form – a transformation that, surprisingly, mirrors her brother’s own. On various instances, she endeavors to caution Black Star against the excessive use of this mode, yet, as one might expect, he persists in his impulsive actions.

7. Eri Shiina

Franchise: Angel Beats!

Shiina serves as the stealthy, silent, yet formidable warrior of the team, much like a traditional female ninja (kunoichi). Despite maintaining a quiet demeanor and rarely speaking, she is an unparalleled fighter, exhibiting fearlessness in every battle. However, her one glaring weakness lies in her affection for adorable trinkets, such as plush toys of puppies or kittens. Since her initial defeat at the hands of Otonashi during their first descent to the Guild, Shiina has been dedicating her time to improving her focus and precision by balancing a broom on her index finger.

Beyond the fact she was among the initial members on the frontline, little else is disclosed about her. Her preferred saying is “how limited” or “narrow-minded”. It’s revealed that Shiina, a slayer known as C7, met an untimely death under unclear circumstances. After entering the world of Angel Beats, she sought shelter underground for over 1000 days.

Yuri realizes that Shiina hails from a different time period. Eventually, Shiina is bested by Hinata with a swift katana strike, thanks to assistance from Kanade and Cha. Once revived, Shiina chooses to align herself with Yuri’s team. It is Yuri who later christens her as Shiina.

6. Tsunade

Franchise: Naruto

I’m a proud disciple of Hiruzen Sarutobi, much like my esteemed comrades Jiraiya and Orochimaru. Contrary to first impressions, I’m not a young woman in my twenties but rather an older lady in her fifties. I employ a transformation technique that keeps me looking youthful. You may recognize me by the Japanese title “hime,” which signifies my noble lineage as the granddaughter of Hashirama Senju and Mito Uzumaki.

In the end, Tsunade assumes the role of the Fifth Hokage to safeguard Konohagakure for her dear ones. Over time, she takes Sakura under her tutelage, similar to how Orochimaru mentored Sasuke and Jiraiya guided Naruto. The series concludes with Tsunade stepping down as Hokage at the end of the Fourth Great Ninja War, passing the title on to Kakashi.

5. Lan Fan

Franchise: Fullmetal Alchemist

Among Lin Yao’s attendants, Lanfan possesses a unique ability to detect homunculi, much like her master and Fu. She is fiercely protective of Lin’s reputation, often showing signs of anger, suggesting deep affection towards him. Her expertise lies in the art of ninjutsu, specializing in the skilled use of bladed weapons. She typically dons a sleek black attire, armed with two daggers, and conceals her identity behind a mask that Edward will eventually shatter upon their encounter. He intends to craft a new one for him at a later time.

In addition, she is Fus’ granddaughter. While luring Scar to summon the homunculi, she will engage in combat with two of them – Gluttony and Wrath, initially mistaking them for ordinary humans. During her battle against Wrath, she will sustain an injury that leaves her unable to use her left arm. Feeling like a burden to her master, she contemplates suicide. However, Lin refuses to accept this outcome.

Later, she plans to sever her arm that’s no longer useful, attach it to a dog as bait, and lead Wrath astray with this tricky strategy. This way, Lin can take advantage of the situation and apprehend Gluttonny.

4. Sarutobi Ayame

Franchise: Gintama

Ayame Sarutobiou Sacchan, who prefers this nickname, is a masochistic female ninja and an enthusiast of bondage. Her affection for Gintoki knows no bounds, and she’s willing to go to great lengths to be with him. Due to her severe vision issues, small misunderstandings often arise whenever she misplaces her glasses.

Outside her job as a waitress at a restaurant themed around cosplay, she carries out another role – a formidable freelance assassin. Her preferred tool, interestingly enough, is Natto. When not ensuring the well-being of Gintoki, she engages in fierce competition with Otae, whom she suspects harbors feelings for Gintoki.

3. Hinata Hyūga

Franchise: Naruto

Hinata Uzumaki, formerly known as Hinata Hyūga, is part of Team 8. She’s often troubled by low self-confidence. Despite being born into the prominent Hyūga clan and groomed to lead it one day, her timidity and inability to assert herself led to her father, Hiashi, disapproving of her, especially after she was defeated by her younger sister Hanabi, who took over as the clan’s leader.

Initially shunned by his father Hiashi, Hinata was raised under the supervision of Kurenai Yuhi. With Kurenai’s tutelage, Hinata embarked on a journey to strengthen herself, both physically and mentally, with the aim of winning back her father’s approval. Hinata’s growing self-assurance is largely fueled by her longstanding admiration for Naruto, who she finds inspiring due to his energy and steadfast refusal to quit. Over time, Hinata’s admiration for Naruto evolves into affection.

In Part II, Hinata openly expresses her love for Naruto while shielding him from Pain. Later on, she aids Naruto during the Ninja Allies’ fight against the Ten-Tails. After the Fourth Great Ninja War concludes, and in the movie The Last: Naruto, Hinata fulfills her ancestor Hamura Ōtsutsuki’s wish by assisting Naruto in defeating Toneri. In the series finale, Hinata gets married to Naruto and they are blessed with two children.

2. Sakura Haruno

Franchise: Naruto

Sakura Uchiha (formerly known as Sakura Haruno) is a Jōnin hailing from Konohagakure, and she was one of the members in Team 7. Due to her long forehead, she faced mockery from other kids. However, Ino Yamanaka stood up for her and offered comfort during those instances.

Over time, as they both matured, their bond weakened significantly due to shared affection towards Sasuke Uchiha. In the early stages, Sakura harbored feelings for Sasuke and held a dislike for Naruto Uzumaki. However, following Sasuke’s departure from the village, Naruto vowed to bring him back. After their initial plan was postponed due to the interference of the Sound Four, Sakura resolved to enhance her strength through training under Tsunade.

Later on, when she was sixteen, she demonstrated advanced abilities honed through her training, drawing remarkable strength and might from a collective force of ten men. In the final episode of the series, Sakura ultimately wed Sasuke Uchiha and together they welcomed their daughter, Sarada Uchiha.

1. Yoruichi Shihōin

Franchise: Bleach

In the manga, Yoruichi Shihōin initially appears as a talking black cat with a masculine voice. However, it’s later revealed that she is actually a woman, a former commander of special operations and captain of the 2nd division. She is also the 22nd head of the Shihōin family, one of Soul Society’s noble houses. Interestingly, she left Soul Society after Kisuke Urahara was exiled.

In combat situations, we’ve never observed her wielding her spirit sword, the zanpakutō. Known as Kisuke Urahara’s dearest companion in cat form, she is famously referred to as either “Goddess of Blitz” or “Divine Speed Yoruichi”. This nickname stems from her exceptional command over the shunpō technique, a skill she has perfected to an incredibly high degree.

In every battle thus far, she’s opted to fight without her spiritual weapon and instead rely on her bare fists, suggesting that her true power remains hidden. Unlike her rank might imply, she’s not particularly fond of formal displays of respect. Moreover, she’s found herself among the top cat characters in anime.
