His inexperience and lack of combat skills have left him running from confrontations. However, fate takes a turn when he witnesses an elderly man being brutally attacked by thugs. In steps a mysterious newcomer, Fuurinji Miu, who effortlessly defends the old man using martial arts that leave Kenichi spellbound. This encounter ignites in him a burning desire to master these martial arts himself.
In this scenario, Miu will introduce him (Kenichi) to his mentors for training. However, it’s unfortunate that these mentors won’t provide him with protection (gloves). Yet, he is in for a shock as the training he receives will propel him to significant advancements in a short span of time. Kiku’s diligent nature and unyielding spirit help them secure lodging at the Kenzaki household, home of a wealthy individual who held their deceased parent in high esteem.
In this very location, I encounter Kanako Sanjo, the charming daughter of dear friends of the Kenzaki family, who harbors a fondness for Ryu. Interestingly enough, it’s always within the welcoming walls of the Kenzaki household where Kiku and Ryu cross paths with Jun, the talented boxer son of Mr. Kenzaki himself.
This narrative introduces the longstanding competition between Ryuji, a determined yet ordinary boxer, whose abilities are molded by the strategic wisdom of his mentor-sister, and Jun, an exceptionally talented middle school boxer who is recognized as one of the most promising young athletes nationwide.
The opening chapter sets the stage for a confrontation between our two protagonists, initially as adversaries in the Tokyo district final. In this high-stakes match, Jun emerges victorious, but at a heavy price: his right arm is severely injured from years of intense training. As a result of his win, Ryuji advances to represent Tokyo in the prestigious national tournament, the Champion Carnival. Here, he encounters various skilled boxers, including Takeshi Kawai, Kazuki Shinatora, and Ishimatsu Katori.
In this story’s first chapter, our characters initially clash as opponents in the Tokyo district final. Despite his injury to his right arm after years of grueling training, Jun triumphs. This victory secures Ryuji’s place as the Tokyo district representative in the Champion Carnival, a nationwide tournament. Throughout this event, he encounters formidable boxers like Takeshi Kawai, Kazuki Shinatora, and Ishimatsu Katori.
At the conclusion of the competition, Ryuji will make new friends, who, along with him and Jun, will unite to form a team of five athletes tasked with representing Japan at the Junior World Championship. In the “Kengan” competition, which Nogi draws Tokita and Yamashita into, both find themselves in a perilous situation. Oma showcases his exceptional skills, providing a chance to clear decades-old debts, whereas Yamashita must feign businessmanship for an unusual plan conceived by Nogi.
2. Ashita no Joe
Original Run: April 1, 1970 – August 31, 1981
Number of Episodes: 126
The main character, Joe Yabuki, is a distressed youth who’s grown up primarily in state-run orphanages, having never encountered his biological parents. When he eventually breaks free and finds himself in Tokyo, Joe drifts aimlessly from location to location, much like a homeless dog. In the grimy underbelly of the city, he crosses paths with Danpei Tange, an elderly boxer who once coached professionally but now leads a life of destitution and intoxication.
The outskirts, a place characterized by social and psychological ostracism, played a crucial role at the story’s inception: an area that, following the war and during the rebuilding phase and the economic boom, faced disadvantages such as poverty, crime (notably the yakuza, or the Japanese mafia), and youth delinquency.
The outskirts of town were a key part of the story’s beginning because it was poor, crime-ridden, and had many troubled young people during the time after World War II when the country was being rebuilt and experiencing an economic boom. This area is often associated with organized crime like the yakuza, the Japanese mafia.
At their initial encounter, seemingly guided by fate, Joe and Danpei find themselves squabbling over an inconsequential matter. However, after receiving numerous blows, the inebriated former boxer regains consciousness, promptly recognizing the remarkable skill of the young newcomer.
Later on, he starts trailing the man, persistently putting forth his idea: training under him and taking up boxing. At first, Joe shows no interest at all, not even giving it a second thought, as the suggestion from the inebriated elderly man seemed peculiar to him.
1. Hajime no Ippo
Original Run: October 4, 2000 – March 29, 2014
Number of Episodes: 127 (+ 1 film + 1 OVA)
Ippo Makunouchi is a timid student, often preoccupied with assisting his mother in managing their fishing enterprise, which leaves him little time for social interaction. As a result, he becomes the target of a gang, particularly Umezawa’s group. One fateful day, Ippo gets brutally attacked, but fortunately, a professional boxer named Mamoru Takamura intervenes and escorts the wounded Ippo to the Kamogawa Gym, which is run by former boxer Genji Kamogawa. Here, his injuries are tended to.
Upon being roused by the sounds of morning boxing practice, Takamura encourages Ippo by offering him an opportunity to vent his emotions on a punching bag. In this moment, the men witness Ippo’s inherent skill in boxing for the first time. Following this event, Ippo spends considerable time pondering and ultimately resolves that he wishes to pursue a career as a professional boxer.
When conveying this message to Mamoru Takamura, it’s apparent that he feels Ippo is underestimating professional boxing. Yet, he can’t dismiss Ippo immediately due to an impressive display of strength, as he’s the only one in the gym who punches the sandbag harder than Ippo, except for Takamura himself.
