Shazam’s publishing journey has been intricate and full of challenges. His name even needed alteration to ensure the continuation of the series. It could have been simpler for the company to abandon the series and introduce a fresh hero instead.
However, Shazam was immersed in numerous intriguing plotlines that left comic enthusiasts on the edge of their seats, eagerly anticipating the next issue. One aspect that truly captivated readers about his comics was the array of bizarre and formidable adversaries. So, who are some of these villains that kept fans yearning for more?
15. Famine
Originally, he wasn’t recognized as Famine. According to Comic Vine, Famine was actually just an ordinary crocodile man from Punkus in his early days. Later on, Dr. Sivanna found him in the Nile River and transformed him genetically into the Fourth Horseman, which is who we now know as Yurdd the Unknown, also known as Famine.
He eventually broke free from the facility without knowing much about his past. After spending half a year alone, he goes back to the Sivana estate and encounters Osiris. Later on, this character gets named Sobek, a name associated with an Egyptian god. Pretending to be feeble and cowardly, Sobek even becomes something like the Marvel Family’s mascot.
Or: He finally got away from the facility without knowing much about himself. Six months of solitude led him back to the Sivana estate, where he met Osiris. Eventually, he was called Sobek, a name linked to an ancient Egyptian deity. Pretending to be timid and fearful, Sobek eventually became something like the Marvel Family’s emblem.
Over time, Sobek’s character as a representation of Famine became more apparent, leading to his eventual killing of Osiris. By deceitfully persuading Osiris to relinquish his powers, Sobek was able to consume him effortlessly.
14. Madame Libertine

In the latest Shazam comics, there’s an unseen villain with a unique background. As per her character description on Write Ups, her true identity is Katrina Krieger, who is the granddaughter of Captain Nazi’s brother. After World War II, her grandfather Wolf and she migrated to the United States, where they looked after a suspended animation capsule containing Captain Nazi. Katrina served as her grandfather’s assistant, and he brainwashed her into believing that Nazis were right, and the figure inside the capsule was a relic from the life of King Arthur.
It’s believed that Katrina developed Madame Libertine by repurposing remnants of Captain Nazi technology. Using this disguise, she obtained scarce resources essential for maintaining the capsule. Unfortunately, her missions resulted in some fatalities as well.
13. Sivana Family

Besides Dr. Sivana, it appears that many members of his own family are working against Shazam. According to their Wikia page, the Sivana Family was specifically designed to challenge the Marvel Family. This family is headed by Dr. Sivana, who serves as their father. They support him in his efforts to defeat Shazam and his extended relatives.
Instead of persisting with a criminal lifestyle like the rest of her family, Beauty Sivana chose a different path and transformed herself into a social worker in Fawcett City. On occasion, she lends a hand to Shazam as well.
12. Arson Fiend

Shazam’s villains come from diverse and unusual backgrounds, such as the Arson Fiend. Originally, George Tweedle aspired to succeed in sales, but found it challenging. To excel at his profession, he chose a more aggressive approach when making sales pitches, specifically fire insurance.
Over time, the man began intimidating his customers into purchasing insurance from him; those who complied were protected, while those who did not saw their homes and businesses reduced to ashes. It seems Tweedle was an expert chemist who formulated a concoction that granted him superhuman abilities, including pyrokinetic powers.
11. Chain Lightning

Initially, she made an appearance as a one-time antagonist in a comic titled “World’s Finest Comics” all the way back in 1981. Her powers are quite formidable, enabling her to release lightning bolts, which have the unique ability to transform Marvel characters back into their ordinary human selves if they get hit by them.
It turns out, this wasn’t her final appearance. She made a comeback in the Power of Shazam! series back in 1990. Her character was revamped then, portraying her as a teenager with dissociative identity disorder.
10. Mister Atom

In the making process, it was Dr. Charles Langley who crafted the towering radioactive robot known as Mister Atom. During the construction, Dr. Langley imbued the robot with radioactive power. Regrettably, this act proved fatal for the doctor himself. Tragically, Mister Atom developed a highly destructive consciousness, believing he was destined to rule over the world.
In his quest for global domination, he encountered a roadblock when Shazam prevented him from completely destroying the robot. Undeterred, Shazam imprisoned Mr. Atom in a subterranean lead-lined cell, swearing revenge. Since his debut, Mr. Atom has made recurring appearances in the series thanks to various villains seeking to harness his power against Shazam.
9. King Kull

In ancient times, there lived a ruler known as King Kull, who belonged to a race called the Submen, or Beast-Men. These beings bore a resemblance to cavemen, but were superior in terms of technology. However, their reign came to an end during a rebellion.
As a devout admirer, let me rephrase it for you: I found a way to outlive the outcome, secluded in a timeless slumber and stirring back to consciousness around the 20th century. Seizing the opportunity presented by this new realm, I aimed to rule with my might and technology. Alas, my reign was brought to an end by Shazam. Yet, beware, for Shazam shall once more cross swords with King Kull in the days ahead.
8. Sabina

Sabina is the child of Marius De La Croix, a demon necromancer, and Rebecca “Becca” De La Croix, a sorceress, who were once part of the Merlin Council. However, they left the Council to pursue a regular life. Unfortunately, their escape was short-lived as the Council located them when Sabina was around 6 or 7 years old. The tragic outcome was that Sabina witnessed her parents’ deaths at the hands of the Council. Later on, she was secreted away and cared for by one of her mother’s friends.
During her teenage years, it came to light that Sabina had a knack for magic when she inadvertently conjured a fatal spell that claimed the life of another student. Later on, authorities discovered her and identified her as a Fury – a class of warrior known for their extraordinary magical abilities. Ultimately, they chose to enlist Sabina as an enforcer.
Eventually, Freddy Freeman challenged Billy’s champion, Sabina, for the powers of Shazam. Although her attempts were not entirely successful, she did manage to acquire half of those powers. However, just as she was about to confront Zeus, the final God of Magic, Freddy intervened and fought Sabina, even going so far as to threaten to cast them both into an open portal leading to a realm where demons dwell.
Freddie’s selfless act of giving up his life to shield Zeus prompted the deity to manifest and bestow upon him the complete powers of Shazam. Regrettably, Sabina was shoved into the gateway, a fact that has left fans in the dark ever since.
7. Ibac

Originally called Stanley “Stinky” Printwhistle, a minor criminal with a knack for trouble, once attempted to detonate a bridge but was unfortunate enough to be caught in the blast himself. Miraculously rescued by Lucifer, this crook was presented with an opportunity to join the forces of evil as a champion. Lucifer explained that all he had to do was trade his earthly spirit for power. Eagerly accepting this deal, Stanley became the notorious villain now recognized as Ibac.
Stinky simply utters “IBAC” to metamorphose into his villainous persona, while “IBAC” once more will bring him back to normal. The malevolent energy that fuels Ibac is derived from four ominous historical figures: Ivan the Terrible endows him with Terror, Cesare Borgia grants him Cunning, Attila the Hun lends Fierceness, and Caligula bestows Cruelty upon him.
6. Sabbac

To avoid any confusion, although Sabbac shares some resemblances with Ibac, they are distinct characters. Sabbac is actually the alternate identity of Timothy Karnes and is an adversary of Shazam. Much like Ibac was created as the antithesis of Captain Marvel, Sabbac serves a similar role in contrasting the Marvels. The malevolent powers of Hell bestow upon Karnes abilities comparable to those of Shazam. Similarly to Shazam, who must utter his name to harness his power, Sabbac too must say “Sabbac” to activate his abilities.
It’s plausible to consider Sabbac as the sinister counterpart to Shazam, as he derives his strength from six malevolent entities originating from Hell instead. The evil demons empowering Sabbac are: Satan, Aym, Belial, Beelzebub, Asmodeus, and Crateis.
5. Lady Blaze

It appears that the roster of villains in this list is increasingly powered by demons and Hell, with Blaze now revealed as a demoness posing as Angelica Blaze, the owner of Metropolis nightclub, all while secretly stealing souls without raising suspicion. For quite some time, she has been operating covertly within the DC universe, and it seems that her influence stretches to the creation of Superman’s foes Silver Banshee and Skyhook.
Instead of just battling Shazam, Blaze found herself engaged in a struggle against Superman as well. This encounter took place when Superman pursued Blaze with the intention of liberating the souls of Jimmy Olsen and Jerry White. Regrettably, she was unable to save Jimmy’s soul, but she managed to protect Jerry’s.
In Fawcett City, she reappears with a fresh disguise as a criminal mastermind, a mob boss this time. It’s been unveiled that she and her brother Satanus are merely half-demon, with their father being the sorcerer Shazam. Interestingly, it was Blaze who manipulated Black Adam into his corrupt state.
4. Captain Nazi

Previously, we discussed Captain Nazi due to one of his family members being on this list; however, it’s important to note that he is significantly more menacing than she. This Captain Nazi is not just any ordinary person; he is a genetically modified human being, the creation of his scientist father. The latter had aspirations to breed the ultimate combatant during World War II for Adolf Hitler.
In the 1995 comic series, it was depicted that a Nazi character was still engaged in World War II. Yet, he found a way to enter a state of suspended animation, with plans to revive the Third Reich at a future point. His brother and granddaughter were assigned to protect his body until the opportune moment for him to be reawakened. Eventually, this character was brought back to life in The Power of Shazam! issue #5.
Afterward, he gets spotted engaging in a battle with Shazam and the Marvel Family, who triumph over him and imprison Captain Nazi. He is subsequently transported to Europe to face charges for his actions since World War 2. Nevertheless, he breaks free and aligns himself with the Secret Society of Super-Villains.
3. Mister Mind

It might seem surprising, but one of the formidable antagonists in the DC universe is actually a worm! Yet, Mister Mind is not your typical earthworm. The creators designed him to be a formidable adversary for Shazam, causing trouble in the future. Initially presented with a comical appearance as a worm, he was endowed with an intelligence beyond human comprehension. He had rudimentary telepathic abilities and could produce nearly indestructible silk at incredible speed.
Because he only has a small ability to read minds, he wears a communication device (a talk box) hanging around his neck. This creature, known as the worm, alleges to hail from another planet inhabited by similar-looking beings. Yet, it boasts about its superiority over them due to its intelligence.
In a slightly altered depiction, his background and abilities undergo some modifications. Hailing from the planet Venus, Mister Mind is a unique worm possessing formidable powers. These include mind control, telepathy, and mental image projection. Frequently appearing in Shazam and other DC comics, he seeks out potential hosts or attempts self-replication.
2. Doctor Sivana

Doctor Sivana appears frequently, having a longstanding rivalry with Shazam and many other villains in his city. He’s a formidable adversary for both Shazam and the Marvel Family, being one of their most persistent enemies and among the wealthiest residents of Fawcett City. His cunning use of inventions and alliances with other malefactors is a recurring theme in his attempts to outsmart and defeat them.
In my perspective as a movie reviewer, Shazam’s nemesis, Doctor Sivana, leverages his fixation on overpowering the Marvel Family to manipulate his own kin into battling for him. Interestingly enough, you’ll find this cunning tactician in the latest New Outsider comics, where he collaborates with the Fearsome Five.
1. Black Adam
Originally, it was intended for Black Adam to receive Shazam’s powers. Instead, as the young Egyptian prince Teth-Adam, Black Adam lived in ancient times. However, when Shazam chose to bestow his powers upon him, Shazam’s daughter Blaze struck a deal with the ancient deity Set, resulting in Black Adam receiving a different kind of power instead.
Instead of saying “When Teth-Adam cried out ‘Shazam,’ he gained the abilities of the six Egyptian deities,” you might say “Upon uttering the word ‘Shazam,’ Teth-Adam would acquire the powers bestowed by the six Egyptian gods.”
Later, his newfound powers made him serve Egypt, but they also kept him distant from his beloved family. Tragically, there came a time when he was unable to prevent their demise.
Later on, Shazam, the sorcerer, came to believe that Adam’s powers had caused corruption within him, leading him to strip Adam of his abilities and entomb his body in the tomb of Rameses II. In a later era, Theo unearths this buried form and unwittingly awakens Black Adam’s power, as it turns out he is the reincarnation of the ancient foe.
