Making a movie is incredibly complicated, with huge teams of people working to make sure everything looks just right. Even with big budgets and lots of time for editing, big productions sometimes overlook small mistakes. Fans often notice things like objects changing position or items that don’t belong in a certain time period – errors that somehow get past the director. Here’s a look at some of the most noticeable and funny mistakes in movie history.
‘American Sniper’ (2014) – Fake Baby

During a dramatic scene with Sienna Miller, Bradley Cooper held what was clearly a plastic doll as if it were a baby. He even moved the doll’s arm with his thumb to make it seem like it was alive. The doll looked stiff and didn’t feel real, which was noticeable to viewers of the film. This obvious mistake distracted from the seriousness of the moment.
‘Quantum of Solace’ (2008) – Sweeping Air

During a thrilling action scene in a James Bond movie, viewers noticed something funny: a background extra pretending to sweep the docks. Instead of actually sweeping the ground, he moved his broom several inches above the concrete as Daniel Craig sped by on a motorcycle. This amusing lack of effort has become a well-known and memorable mistake in the series.
‘North by Northwest’ (1959) – Boy Covering Ears

During filming of the Mount Rushmore cafeteria scene in North by Northwest, a young extra unexpectedly reacted to the sound of a gunshot before it happened. The boy instinctively covered his ears just before Eve Kendall shot Roger Thornhill, revealing he’d anticipated the noise after several takes. Despite Alfred Hitchcock’s reputation for demanding flawless performances, he left this small, realistic moment in the final version of the film.
‘Pretty Woman’ (1990) – Breakfast Continuity

In a scene from the movie, Julia Roberts is shown talking to Richard Gere while eating a croissant at breakfast. When the camera looks back at her, the croissant mysteriously turns into a pancake between shots. She then proceeds to eat the pancake, even though she was just holding a croissant moments before. This is a well-known example of a funny mistake with food in movie editing.
‘Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl’ (2003) – Cowboy Hat Crew

On the deck of the ship, Captain Jack Sparrow is giving orders to his crew, but a crew member in modern clothes is visible in the background. He’s wearing a white shirt and cowboy hat and is looking out to sea, standing behind Johnny Depp. The contrast between his outfit and the pirate costumes was first noticed by fans when the movie came out on widescreen home video.
‘Braveheart’ (1995) – Background Car

During a battle scene in the historical war film directed by Mel Gibson, a modern white car unexpectedly appears in the background. The car is visible behind one of the Scottish warriors as the armies clash. The film crew didn’t notice this mistake, which disrupts the sense of time and place for viewers who spot it.
‘The Matrix’ (1999) – Camera Reflection

When Morpheus and Neo visited the Oracle, a camera lens was accidentally visible in the reflection of the doorknob. The filmmaker tried to conceal the camera with a coat that matched Morpheus’s tie, but viewers can still clearly see the lens and the camera operator reflected in the metal. This mistake happened even though the movie was famous for its impressive special effects.
‘Pulp Fiction’ (1994) – Pre-existing Bullet Holes

Before Jules and Vincent are shot at, you can already see bullet holes in the wall behind them. These marks are visible as they confront the man in the bathroom. Surprisingly, the shooter misses every shot, even though the wall is already riddled with holes. Director Quentin Tarantino intentionally left this mistake in the scene, which takes place during a conversation about divine intervention.
‘Gladiator’ (2000) – Gas Canister

During a reenactment of the Battle of Carthage, a chariot flipped, revealing a modern gas cylinder used to propel the vehicle into the air. While director Ridley Scott successfully created a realistic Roman setting, this piece of modern equipment briefly broke the illusion. The mistake became clear when the chariot slid across the arena floor.
‘Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope’ (1977) – Stormtrooper Head Bang

While filming Star Wars, a Stormtrooper actor bumped his head on a doorframe as he entered the Death Star’s control room. He briefly flinched, but kept in step with the other soldiers. Later, sound effects artists playfully added a noticeable ‘bonk’ sound to the scene in later versions of the film, turning the mistake into a beloved and famous blooper from the entire series.
