As a passionate cinephile, I was taken aback by the latest poll results on Ranker, where more than 20,000 enthusiasts voted for their ultimate favorite superhero film of all time. The outcome might just leave you surprised!
10. ‘Unbreakable’ (2000)
As a passionate cinephile, I wasn’t expecting M. Night Shyamalan, who’s not typically associated with the superhero genre, to venture into that realm with ‘Unbreakable.’ Yet, the unexpected happened, and it was nothing short of remarkable. The film’s quality surpassed all expectations, eventually spawning a trilogy of unconventional superhero movies. Unlike traditional horror flicks, ‘Unbreakable’ delved deeply into psychological aspects, offering a unique twist to the genre.
9. ‘Glass’
‘Glass’ represents an unexpected third chapter in Shyamalan’s series, initially conceived as a standalone story. Akin to its predecessors, ‘Glass’ is generally classified as a horror film, emphasizing psychological complexity and suspense over startling surprises. The movie explores unsettling topics like mental manipulation, the merging of reality and illusion, and the ominous capabilities of extraordinary abilities.
8. ‘Blade 2’ (2002)
‘Blade 2’ didn’t garner as much praise as the first movie, despite following the same successful method and pattern. The Blade series is commonly categorized as horror due to its vampires, gloomy cinematography, and spooky ambiance. Compared to ‘The Unbreakable’, it features more violence and startling scenes, but by today’s standards, it remains relatively modest in this regard.
7. ‘Spawn’ (1997)
Lieutenant Colonel Al Simmons, a former U.S. Marine Corps Force Recon and CIA agent, is dispatched by his superior, Jason Wynn, on a secret mission to penetrate a biochemical weapons facility in North Korea. However, Simmons is unwittingly set up for betrayal and death during the operation, executed by assassin Jessica Priest, leading to a series of dramatic consequences. After meeting an untimely demise, Simmons ends up in the underworld and enters into a deal with Malebolgia, the ruler of this realm.
‘Spawn’ is not generally hailed as a leading superhero movie, primarily because of the high level of violence it displayed at the time of its release. Critically, it received only modest acclaim, with particular praise for its practical special effects. It continues to confound many why it ranks higher than some of the other movies on this list.
Frankly, I’ve never found the ‘Hellboy’ series particularly scary, nor would I categorize it as a horror film, especially not ‘The Golden Army.’ Given its central character is essentially a demon and the religious undertones, it’s clear why some might view it as horror. However, that’s not how I personally perceive it.
5. ‘Split’ (2019)
‘Split’ functions independently as a follow-up to M. Night Shyamalan’s 2000 film ‘Unbreakable,’ although it wasn’t advertised as such at first. The movie was praised for its combination of suspense reminiscent of Hitchcock, chilling horror aspects, and thought-provoking themes. It’s no surprise that it’s often seen as the strongest of the three films in the series.

3. ‘The Crow’ (1994)
‘The Raven’ establishes an unsettling ambiance using Gothic backdrops, spooky illumination, and occult aspects, which are typical of the genre. It primarily revolves around concepts of vengeance and justice, with the main character returning from the dead to avenge his own and his fiancée’s killings – a common thread in horror stories.
2. ‘Constantine’ (2005)
As a movie enthusiast who’s always up for a good superhero flick, I must admit that ‘Constantine’ has a unique charm that echoes the chilling atmosphere of ‘The Exorcist.’ This film manages to explore some lesser-tread territories within the expansive DC universe. However, John Constantine’s portrayal by Keanu Reeves seems to have sparked quite a debate among us diehard fans.
1. ‘Brightburn’ (2019)
In simpler terms, ‘Brightburn’ stands out as the authentic superhero horror movie on the list, as it was advertised that way from the beginning. Unlike traditional superhero stories, this film presents a young boy with extraordinary abilities who transforms into a menacing figure rather than a hero. The movie keeps up a consistent feeling of psychological suspense and fear, which explains why it’s highly regarded.
