‘Took Me A While’: Dennis Quaid Reveals He Was ‘Scared’ To Portray Ronald Reagan In Biopic

As a lifestyle expert with a keen eye for Hollywood and its luminaries, I must say that Dennis Quaid’s journey to portray Ronald Reagan in the upcoming biopic drama is nothing short of inspiring. With over five decades in the industry, it’s rare to see an actor who still finds the courage to step out of his comfort zone, especially when it comes to playing such a revered figure as the 40th president of the United States.

Actor Dennis Quaid will portray Ronald Reagan in his upcoming biographical drama titled “Reagan,” slated for release on August 30, 2024. This movie focuses on the life of the 40th president. During a recent chat, the veteran actor admitted that despite his long-standing career in Hollywood spanning over five decades, he felt apprehensive about taking on this role.

According to Quaid, he was initially offered the role in 2018 but declined because for him, Reagan is his most admired president. Interestingly, Dennis compared Reagan to Muhammad Ali, stating that he’s renowned worldwide. Despite being incredibly nervous, Quaid eventually agreed to take on the role after careful consideration.

In the recent installment of Dana Carvey and David Spade’s Fly on the Wall podcast, Dennis Quaid shared his thoughts on portraying Ronald Reagan. Contrary to the hosts’ belief that he was the ideal choice for the role, Dennis humbly demurred. He explained, “We may share a sunny disposition as actors, but everyone recognizes what he looks like and sounds like. I didn’t feel quite right stepping into those shoes. It’s a challenging part to play. I had to ponder it for a while because imitating him would be simple, so finding the real person was more complex.”

Quaid explained that he visited Reagen Ranch in Southern California and sensed Reagen’s presence, which helped him portray his character more effectively. After being in the acting field for such a long time, Reagen has moved up to the top position on the veteran actor’s list of favorite movies. He stated, “The Right Stuff was my favorite movie I’d ever done until Reagen took over the top spot, after 40 years.”

Back in the day, hearing about a potential role as Ronald Reagan in a project left me shaking with apprehension. In a 2021 chat with Entertainment Weekly, I confessed, “I didn’t grasp why they were proposing Ronald Reagan to me; it just didn’t resonate. I held him in such high regard that the mere thought of playing him sent a shiver of fear down my spine when the offer came. That feeling usually means I should take on the challenge, as it falls outside of my comfort zone.”

Regardless of any apprehension, Dennis Quaid agreed to star in the film. Thank goodness he did, since he acknowledged that this role ranks among the most captivating he’s tackled thus far. It was a privilege for him to embody Reagan, as he expressed through his performance.
