‘Took a little bit of liberty’: Michelle Yeoh Opens Up On Her Madame Morrible Character In Wicked Film

As a devoted fan of magical tales and captivating performances, I am beyond thrilled about the upcoming release of “Wicked.” The recent revelations from the actress portraying Madame Morrible have only heightened my anticipation for this extraordinary cinematic adventure.


The popular fantasy film “Wicked” is winning over the hearts of numerous movie enthusiasts. Lately, the actress playing Madame Morrible in this much-awaited production shared some details about her part and the spontaneous additions she incorporated into it.

At the Los Angeles debut of “Wicked,” she expressed her opinions, with Broadway legend Sheryl Lee Ralph, who portrayed the character on stage, by her side.

The actress involved in Everything Everywhere All at Once mentioned during an interview with Lee Ralph, as reported by Deadline, that they made slight adjustments when portraying Madame Morrible for the film.

Afterward, Yeoh inquired from the Broadway performer about their thoughts on Madame Morrible, the role the Memoirs of a Geisha actress portrayed, prior to the film’s premiere.

In response to actress Sheryl Lee Ralph, who played in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, she emphasized that when portraying characters on Broadway, “they strictly adhere to the script without any deviations.

She added that nothing has changed but only what the audience imagines. 

Discussing the personality of Madame Morrible, the performer from Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit mentioned that she is someone who recognizes talent and expressed, “For quite some time now, I have been on the lookout, for a skill such as yours to emerge…

Later, Yeoh elaborated on the significant distinction between portraying a character on screen versus on stage, expressing admiration for “Alice Brooks, the exceptional director of photography in Wicked, who masterfully captures every intricate detail.

The actress who played Shang-Chi commended director Jon M. Chu for skillfully expressing profound emotions and character sentiments within the film. She highlighted that he effectively depicted the emotions of both principal characters, allowing viewers to understand the thoughts and feelings of Glinda and Elphaba when they sing in the movie.

Wicked is a musical fantasy starring Ariana Grande as Glinda and Cynthia Erivo Elphaba. 

Additionally, apart from Yeoh, the singer of “We Can’t Be Friends,” and Elphaba, the movie also includes actors like Jeff Goldblum, Peter Dinklage, Jonathan Bailey, and several others.

Wicked will be released on November 22, 2024.
