As a dedicated follower who has witnessed the rollercoaster ride of fame and personal struggles, I find Lisa Marie Presley‘s story both heart-wrenching and inspiring. Having lived under the shadow of her iconic father and famous parents, it is disheartening to see her battle with addiction, but at the same time, it is commendable how she courageously shared her experiences in her memoir.

Lisa Marie Presley, the sole offspring of Elvis and Priscilla Presley, struggled with a serious opioid addiction as she grew older. This well-known singer – who sadly died at 54 in January 2023 from a small bowel obstruction, a consequence of past bariatric surgery – planned to disclose information about her addiction battles in her upcoming posthumous memoir.
She stated that the amount increased to 80 pills daily, indicating that more and more of the substance was needed for a high sensation. Eventually, your body reaches a point where it can no longer handle it. This is what happened with her addiction, which she admitted started out as recreational but soon became destructive.
It became a serious matter of addiction and withdrawal in the big leagues. “I just wanted to check out. It was too painful to be sober,” she added. In the memoir, Riley Keough — who finished the memoir listening to the self-recorded tapes left by her late mother — revealed that Lisa Marie consumed opioids to relieve pain during her c-section delivery.
Later on, she started giving them sleep-inducing drugs, but she felt a deep sense of “regret” over her drug addiction as she was a mother of two young children. After being admitted to the hospital due to her addiction, Lisa Marie was transferred to a rehabilitation center. Yet, Riley believed that her mom wasn’t yet prepared for sobriety following her bariatric surgery in rehab.
Even though she abstained from drugs following her stint at rehab, she found herself in an intoxicated state due to what some might call the “post-rehab mix”, which unfortunately resulted in a hospital visit this time for a seizure. After this incident, Riley notes that she was deeply affected by it.
During a conversation with PEOPLE, the actress who plays Daisy Jones and The Six shared that certain parts of writing her mother’s memoir were particularly challenging. These included sections about her mother’s struggles with addiction and the tragic suicide of her brother Benjamin in 2020, after his long battle with addiction as well.
Through the publication of her memoir titled “From Here to the Great Unknown”, Riley aims to shed light on her mother’s true character, offering readers an intimate and relatable portrayal of love, heartache, loss, addiction, and family. In sharing this extraordinary story with the world, she hopes that people can connect with a deeply human experience that was close to her mother’s heart, which is now also her wish.
From Here to the Great Unknown is available now.
