As a lifestyle expert with a background in grief counseling, I have had the opportunity to work with countless individuals navigating the complex and often overwhelming emotions that come with losing a loved one. Tony Bennett’s daughters, Antonia and Johanna, are no exception. Their poignant reflections on their grief journey resonate deeply with my own experiences and those of many others I’ve worked with.
Tony Bennett’s daughters, Antonia and Johanna, are inundated with nostalgic recollections of their annual trips to Cape Cod, Massachusetts with their father around the anniversary of his death. In an interview with PEOPLE, Johanna shared that those experiences with her dad were incredible and they are both dealing with the grief that comes with losing him.
Before the anniversary approached, Johanna reflected deeply on her grieving experience over the past year. Likewise, Antonia admitted that at times it is essential to operate on autopilot in order to continue making progress.
After a year had passed, I noticed that people started to stop asking me if I was alright or how I was coping with my loss. But little did they know, that’s exactly when the heaviness of my grief became unbearable.

More on Antonia and Johanna’s views about dealing with the loss of their dad
I understand how Antonia described grief as a wave-like sensation that hits you unexpectedly. It’s not an easy feeling to navigate, and I can relate when she mentioned how challenging it can be to deal with it in social situations. You may feel exposed and vulnerable, making it difficult to fully embrace the emotions that come with it in public spaces.
Johanna shared an experience from the past when she felt deeply saddened during one of her initial social interactions following her father’s passing. This occurred at a gathering where people met her for the first time after Tony Bennett’s demise. She expressed feeling overwhelmed as everyone approached her with sympathy and inquiries about her wellbeing. “I was fine up until this moment,” she remarked.

What do Tony Bennett’s daughters miss the most about him?
Later in the conversation, Johanna expressed her longing for his witty sarcasm. Regarding Antonia, she mentioned that she looks forward to his phone calls since he’ll be traveling extensively from summer through fall. They used to speak frequently, but their contact decreased as he grew older, however, he continued calling regularly until the end.
She shared, “I deeply miss the sound of his voice. Every time he called my name, he did so with such enthusiasm and clarity. I can still imagine and almost hear that familiar sound.”
