Smallville star Tom Welling says he wants to suit up as Batman in James Gunn’s DCU.
Michael Rosenbaum, who played Lex Luthor on Smallville, recently joined several of his former castmates at a Comic Con Liverpool panel (shared on YouTube). During the panel, fans asked them which other DC characters they’d like to portray.
Michael Rosenbaum instantly indicated Tom Welling, silently saying “Batman,” which caused a strong reaction from the audience. Welling quickly confirmed it, replying, “I mean, Batman.”
Aaron Ashmore playfully suggested he could be Smallville star Tom Welling’s Robin, a reference to the Batman character. Welling responded with a lighthearted, “I’d fly with you any time,” which kept the audience entertained.

Welling Has Wanted Batman For Years
Welling has mentioned wanting to play Batman before. Back in 2019, while on Rosenbaum’s podcast, Inside of You, he said that if he could play any character besides Superman, it would be Batman. He explained he’s a fan of the character and believes a fresh take on Batman could be exciting.
While the show was on the air, Tom Welling tried to get Bruce Wayne (Batman) to make a cameo on Smallville. Although DC Comics wouldn’t let the show actually feature Batman, Welling still explored possibilities.
At Terrificon 2024, he shared an idea he had for a scene involving Bruce Wayne. He envisioned Clark Kent entering Lex Luthor’s mansion, Lex acknowledging Bruce Wayne off-camera, and Batman then calmly leaving. This would have been a subtle way to confirm Batman’s existence in that universe without actually showing him in costume.

Could Welling Actually Land The Role?
These remarks from Welling follow ongoing fan discussions about who James Gunn will choose to play Batman in the upcoming film, The Brave and the Bold.
James Gunn hasn’t made any official announcements, and Andy Muschietti recently stated he’s not permitted to discuss the project. Plus, it’s still uncertain whether it will actually happen.
