Tom Holland Says Robert Downey, Jr. Saved His First MCU Spider-Man Scene

As a gamer who’s spent countless hours rewatching and analyzing the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), I can confidently say that Robert Downey Jr.’s influence on the franchise is immeasurable. His charisma, wit, and undeniable charm have not only made Iron Man an iconic character but also created a camaraderie among the cast that transcends the silver screen.

It’s universally acknowledged that one aspect of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) that resonates with everyone is their fondness for Robert Downey Jr. There are several compelling reasons behind this admiration. Firstly, he played a pivotal role in kick-starting the entire MCU, and his character was instrumental during the franchise’s formative years. However, what truly endears him to many is his reported friendly demeanor on set and overall personality. The latest testament to this comes from Tom Holland, who recently praised Downey Jr. on the Rich Roll podcast. According to Holland, Downey Jr. stepped in to save Holland’s first MCU Spider-Man scene in Captain America: Civil War, by advocating for him during filming. (A big thank you to Deadline for highlighting this story.)

In his audition, there were about eight pages of dialogue – a longer scene than usual, which is typically just two pages. However, when he got to set on the first day, he discovered that his scene was significantly different from what he’d prepared because of major edits. Being new to the industry, Holland was flexible and willing to adapt, but Downey Jr. raised some concerns about these changes with the Russo Brothers.

Holland explained, “Downey questioned where a certain line for the kid disappeared during filming. The Russos replied something like, ‘Given our 140-page script, we can’t afford to spend too much time on this.’ But Downey insisted, ‘No, no, no, you should invest some time in this. Let’s shoot the entire scene from the audition. You might need it later, but having it is better than not.’ And they ended up using all of it. So, I owe that idea to him.

Tom Holland expresses a desire to someday pay forward Robert Downey Jr.’s act of salvaging his initial MCU scene to a different individual in the future. It’s heartwarming to imagine such kindness being passed along.
