Tom Hardy Sets Record Straight on Venom vs Spider-Man Crossover

Tom Hardy clarifies the rumors surrounding a potential crossover between his Venom character and Spider-Man.

Originally, it seemed like there might have been plans for a collaboration between Venom and Spider-Man, but those ideas were allegedly scrapped due to studio conflicts. However, the actor clarifies that he may not have explicitly stated this in the past.

During an interview with THR about “MobLand”, Hardy defended the misunderstanding by stating that a misquote was to blame. He explained that although the crossover nearly occurred, it wasn’t sabotaged by backstage drama at Sony; instead, it simply didn’t come into existence.

What did Tom Hardy say about the Venom vs Spider-Man crossover?

In the conversation, THR raised Hardy’s earlier statements about the studio politics hindering Venom pairing with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man in a movie, asking if he was suggesting a crossover or if it was Marvel Studios’ idea. However, Hardy clarified and dismissed those assertions.

To clarify, I never mentioned the specific topic of other superheroes appearing together in a film. Explaining to kids why their favorite heroes can’t share the screen is challenging because they often want them to be friends. We came close, but unfortunately, it didn’t work out, which is the reality. It simply didn’t come to fruition. We almost had a collaboration, as I recall being part of the Spider-Man movie, and you know it was connected, but it never materialized. Now, the trilogy has concluded without this happening. So, it wasn’t canceled or hindered by anything; it just didn’t occur.

He continued and said he was actually misquoted:

It appears my words were twisted in that instance. The enthusiasm for Venom and all things related to superheroes is immense, and it seems my statement has grown beyond what I actually said. Just wanted to clarify that the quote attributed to me was not mine.

What did Tom Hardy previously say?

During my recent interview on the Bingeworthy TV Podcast, I learned from The Playlist that Tom Hardy himself hinted at behind-the-scenes discussions, implying that studio politics might have played a role in certain decisions.

We came very near; we were practically on the brink of collaborating, except for a movie project, which I would have relished as it promises a great deal of enjoyment. However, the points you outlined later (he hinted, referring to the political matter) eventually clarified everything.

Additionally, Hardy clarified the reasons behind his decision to collaborate, since his children had been curious as to why such a crossover hadn’t taken place in the past.

To put it simply, my primary motivation would be for the children. I believe that these superhero characters hold a special significance for them, as evidenced by the box office success of such movies. It seems that kids have an innate understanding of the importance of seeing their favorite heroes united on screen.

Sony possesses the cinematic rights for Spider-Man and related characters like Venom. However, at present, Spider-Man is temporarily collaborating with Marvel Studios within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Hardy disclosed that certain restrictions were imposed on his actions during filming.

We received a specific range of restrictions, but luckily, we got the chance to creatively explore a cherished intellectual property such as Venom. Given these constraints, we did everything we could and enjoyed every bit of it. We invested our entire passion into this project while adhering to the limitations set for Venom. Consequently, the pleasure derived from the work surpassed the restrictions we faced since we concentrated on what we were permitted to do with him, and we genuinely appreciated the opportunity.

What’s next for Venom?

The future of Venom remains uncertain since Sony appears to have wrapped up its Spider-Man spinoff universe. Tom Hardy has indicated he’s finished with the Venom character. The latest films featuring Kraven the Hunter and Madame Web underperformed significantly at the box office, even more so than Madame Web. It’s rumored that Sony may be planning a Marvel reboot, focusing on lesser-known Spider-Man characters rather than those closely related to Spider-Man.

What’s next for Spider-Man?

I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be reprising my role as Spider-Man again for a new adventure titled “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” set to hit theaters on July 31, 2026. Filming begins soon! Alongside me, you’ll see the incredible talents of Sadie Sink and Zendaya on the big screen. Can’t wait for this fresh start!

It’s anticipated that both Tom Holland and the character he plays, Spider-Man, will make appearances in “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars.
