Tom Hanks Will Play Abraham Lincoln in LINCOLN IN THE BARDO

Tom Hanks is known for playing a wide range of characters – from a man stranded on a desert island to a dedicated runner and even the whimsical conductor of the Polar Express. He’s also excelled in historical roles, portraying figures like pilot Sully Sullenberger and Walt Disney. Now, he’s taking on another iconic role: Abraham Lincoln. Hanks will star as the president in the upcoming film Lincoln in the Bardo, which combines live-action with stop-motion animation.

The movie Lincoln in the Bardo, based on George Saunders’ popular novel, tells the story of Abraham Lincoln coping with the loss of his son. Tom Hanks will star as Lincoln and also produce the film through his production company, Playtone, alongside Gary Goetzman. Duke Johnson, an Academy Award nominee, is directing and producing the feature.

The upcoming film adaptation of Lincoln in the Bardo will combine stop-motion animation with real actors. It focuses on a deeply personal time in Abraham Lincoln’s life, immediately after the death of his young son. The story, which explores themes of love, compassion, and how people cope with loss, is told through a large group of characters – some who are alive, some who are ghosts, and some based on real people, while others are fictional. It sounds unusual, but also intriguing.

Here’s the official description, according to IMDB:

In 1862, after the death of his son Willie, Abraham Lincoln visits his grave. This triggers a strange event where spirits in a transitional realm must guide the boy to the afterlife before he becomes lost forever.

Paul Johnson, Young Johnson, and Devon Young Rabinowitz are producing the film through Starburns Industries. This is the first project Starburns is making after recently announcing a new fund for films, and filming will happen in London.
