Tom Hanks’ Daughter Elizabeth Anne Details Her Turbulent Childhood in New Memoir: ‘Only Memories of My Parents…’

In a recently published memoir, Tom Hanks’ daughter, known as EA (Elizabeth Anne), shared insights about her challenging upbringing. Born to Tom Hanks and his then-wife, Samantha Lewes, Elizabeth is now recognized by either of these two names.

In a passage obtained by People magazine, Anne described her and her brother Colin’s early years following their parents’ separation in 1985. She recounted that her few memories of both parents being together were at Colin’s high school graduation and later, her own high school graduation.

She shared that she possesses only a single photograph depicting her standing with both her parents. She reminisced about her mother suddenly relocating their family from Los Angeles to Sacramento “unexpectedly,” after the divorce from the actor.

Following the divorce agreement, Elizabeth often spent her summer vacations in Los Angeles with her father and stepmother. Over time, she also started visiting numerous younger half-siblings. However, she openly shared that her childhood years, from age 5 to 14, were a mix of “confusion, violence, scarcity, and affection.

She cherished being a resident of Sacramento, living in a house adorned with columns and boasting a backyard complete with a pool – that is, until her mother’s health started declining and circumstances took an unfortunate turn. Elizabeth remembered the backyard filling up with dog waste and the house taking on the unpleasant odor of smoke.

As her mother’s physical abuse stemmed from emotional mistreatment, the writer chose to leave home and settle in Los Angeles during her seventh-grade year. This graduate of Vassar College later disclosed that the child custody agreement subsequently changed at this juncture.

Upon the turn of events, weekends and summers found me escaping to Sacramento, while Los Angeles became my permanent residence. My dear mother, Samantha Lewes, who was known as Susan Dillingham, left us in 2002 due to a battle with lung cancer. She was no more at the tender age of 19 for me.

Currently, she’s embarking on an exploration to discover more about her mother. During this voyage, she penned a memoir titled “The 10: Journey Through Family and the Open Highway.
