Tom Felton Backs J.K. Rowling Again, Says He’s “Not Really Attuned” to Gender-Critical Controversy

Tom Felton, famous for his role as Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter movies, has publicly voiced his support for author J.K. Rowling again, despite the continued debate surrounding her views on gender.

The actor recently returned to the stage in New York, reprising his role in the Broadway hit ‘Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’ at the Lyric Theatre. It was a particularly moving experience for him.

During the final applause, Felton was clearly touched by the audience’s enthusiastic cheers, which were so strong they nearly overpowered his lines. Even though some people questioned his choice to rejoin the series, he has consistently shown his dedication to both the franchise and J.K. Rowling.

When asked if the controversy surrounding J.K. Rowling affected his decision to perform, Tom Felton said he wasn’t really aware of it. He emphasized that he appreciates the worldwide influence of the Harry Potter series and acknowledged Rowling’s role in creating a story that has brought people together across different generations.

I often remind myself how fortunate I am to have traveled the world. Being here in New York, I’ve realized nothing unites people quite like Harry Potter, and J.K. Rowling is the reason for that. I’m deeply thankful to her.

Felton regularly appears at fan events, always highlighting how much happiness the franchise brings to people. He once shared, “I’m always struck by how wonderful she was both in her work and as a person. Though I’ve only met her a few times, she was always kind, and I’m really thankful for that.”

Tom Felton remains close friends with his Harry Potter co-stars, Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint, but he prefers to stay out of public disagreements. He explains that he doesn’t like to take sides, and believes it’s important to remember that he and his friends often have different lifestyles and make different choices, which is something they should all respect and celebrate.

As a big fan of the Harry Potter films, it’s interesting to see how the cast is handling the controversy around J.K. Rowling. It’s not just Tom Felton who’s spoken up for her; several other actors I admire, like Helena Bonham Carter, Ralph Fiennes, Jason Isaacs, and even the late Robbie Coltrane, have all publicly recognized her work on the books and films, as well as the good she’s done through charity, even if they don’t agree with everything she says. It shows a lot of respect for her original contribution to the world they helped create.

Jason Isaacs, known for playing Lucius Malfoy, shared that he would never intentionally hurt J.K. Rowling, acknowledging the good she’s done. Ralph Fiennes, who played Lord Voldemort, explained he understands Rowling’s point of view and doesn’t believe it’s fair to call her extremist, emphasizing her right to express her identity as a woman.

Rupert Grint’s ongoing involvement shows how much he cares about the Harry Potter series and J.K. Rowling, despite the continuing controversy around her public statements.
