Tom Cruise Visits Paramount to Mark Skydance Takeover, Teases Return to Top Franchises

Paramount Pictures is shifting its movie plans, pausing development on some projects while prioritizing sequels to popular franchises like “Top Gun” and “Days of Thunder.” One film affected by this change is the sports drama “Winter Games,” starring Miles Teller, which is currently on hold.

Tom Cruise recently went to the Paramount Studios to celebrate Skydance’s acquisition and discuss reprising his famous characters.

Tom Cruise is currently in talks to appear in both a follow-up to “Top Gun: Maverick” and a new “Days of Thunder” movie. Reports from November 2024 indicated he was close to finalizing a deal to star in and produce the “Days of Thunder” sequel, with both films being developed at the same time.

Paramount is developing a new “Star Trek” movie, but won’t be using the actors from the previous films, like Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto. The studio is also focusing on projects with broader appeal, particularly to audiences in the American Midwest. One example is a Western about a cowboy and his dog searching for his daughter – described as a Western take on the action movie “Taken”.

Miles Teller has talked about potentially returning for another “Top Gun” movie. He shared that he’s already suggested a sequel focusing on his character, Rooster, and has been discussing it with Tom Cruise.

In a recent interview with GQ, director Joseph Kosinski floated an exciting idea: a crossover between his films “Days of Thunder” and the F1 project. He envisions a connection between Cole Trickle (Tom Cruise’s character from “Days of Thunder”) and Sonny Hayes (Brad Pitt’s character from the F1 film), suggesting they were past rivals. Kosinski recalled a legendary go-kart race between Pitt and Cruise during the filming of “Interview with the Vampire,” and believes audiences would love to see them compete on a racetrack again.

As a film buff, it looks like Paramount is playing a smart game right now. They’re definitely still invested in the movies we already know and love – continuing those big franchises – but they’re also taking chances on really original, exciting ideas that could potentially become the next big thing.
