As a huge Tom Cruise fan, I always wondered why he hadn’t been in a Star Wars movie! Well, it sounds like that might have changed, even if it was just a quick cameo. The director of the new Star Wars film, Shawn Levy, recently shared that Tom visited the set last November. Apparently, as a joke, Levy challenged him to operate a camera, and Tom actually did! He ended up filming a scene – a lightsaber duel, no less! It’s not a starring role, but as a fan, it’s awesome to know he’s at least part of the Star Wars universe now.
Shawn Levy, a frequent director on Stranger Things, shared a story about Tom Cruise on set: Cruise was wading through mud and water, completely focused as he tried to get the perfect shot with a digital camera. Levy was impressed by Cruise’s skill, noting that he handled the camera like a professional. In fact, Levy revealed that some parts of the movie were actually filmed by Cruise himself – how amazing is that? Steven Spielberg visited the set last year, but didn’t operate the camera. Interestingly, Spielberg did pick up a camera when visiting George Lucas on the set of Revenge of the Sith, where he ended up filming part of the duel on Mustafar.
Big news for dedicated Star Wars fans: the upcoming film Starfighter will feature a lightsaber duel, and it looks like it’s happening in a swamp! Because the movie is set a few years after the last Star Wars trilogy, it wasn’t certain that Jedi or Sith would even be involved. The title Starfighter suggested it could have been a simple story about an X-Wing pilot. But now we know lightsabers will be present, leading to speculation about Ryan Gosling’s character – could he be a Jedi, perhaps even one trained by Luke Skywalker? We’ll have to wait until May 2027, when Shawn Levy (and Tom Cruise’s) Star Wars: Starfighter is released, to find out.
