Tom Brevoort, a top editor at Marvel Comics, prefers to provoke a strong reaction from fans – even anger – rather than have them simply not care.
Well, Brevoort is flat out wrong.
Angry fans don’t stay angry forever. They leave. Just ask the MCU and Star Wars fans.
Marvel Cosmic also proves it.

Rabid Marvel Cosmic fans
Two decades ago, Marvel found significant success with the storylines Annihilation, Nova, and Guardians of the Galaxy. These comics resonated with readers, offering quality stories that led to strong sales.
The editor confirmed the titles were selling very well – I even helped with promotion. Brevoort was also surprised by how well the Thanos Imperative trade paperback did, especially considering there was no marketing campaign, involvement of major creators, or connections to the wider Marvel universe or films.
Marvel then threw it away.

Marvel ditched what worked
As a longtime fan, it feels like they abandoned what made Marvel’s cosmic stories great in the first place. They started prioritizing cross-promotion and, honestly, getting involved in things that didn’t serve the stories. They shifted the overall feel and, worst of all, seemed to ignore the fans who had supported these characters and concepts for years, the very people who made Marvel Cosmic successful.
A lot of those readers got mad.
Marvel didn’t care. Well, they all left.

Imperial already canceled
Now look at Imperial.
Marvel’s recent attempt to revitalize its cosmic-themed comics didn’t go well, as several titles were quickly canceled and the whole line struggled to gain traction.
Titles announced as ongoings have already been canceled before they’ve even been released.
That’s what happens when you drive off your core fans and expect them to come back anyway.

Marvel Cosmic fans send the message
Brevoort seems to be mistaking strong reactions for continued interest. Just because people are loudly complaining online doesn’t mean they still care about the product – it usually indicates they’ve lost interest and will stop purchasing it.
Marvel Cosmic fans already sent that message.
They got angry. Then they left. How’d that work out?
