Tom Brady recently shared that his new dog, Junie, is a clone of his beloved former pet, Lua, who was a pit bull mix and passed away in December 2023.
Soon after Lua passed away, Tom Brady brought Junie, a dog he co-parents with his ex-wife Gisele Bündchen and their kids, into his family. He later revealed that Junie is a clone of Lua.
Tom Brady revealed the news on Tuesday, November 4th, at the same time as Colossal Biosciences – a biotech company where he’s an investor – made its own announcement.
As a huge film fan, I was fascinated to learn that Colossal, the company behind the de-extinction efforts, actually worked with Tom Brady to create a clone of his dog! And get this – on the very same day, they announced they’d bought Viagen Pets and Equine. Viagen is pretty famous for cloning pets – they’ve already done it for celebrities like Barbra Streisand, who had her dog Samantha cloned, and Paris Hilton with her Diamond Baby. It’s wild to think about all the possibilities!
PEOPLE reports that Viagen has special rights to use innovative technologies created by the Roslin Institute in Edinburgh – the same lab that famously cloned Dolly the Sheep in the late 1990s.
Brady shared that their dog Lua was cloned using blood taken before she died. “My animals are everything to my family and me,” Brady said. “A few years ago, I worked with Colossal to clone our aging dog using a simple blood sample collected before she passed away. They have incredible non-invasive cloning technology.”
He explained that the company recreated his family’s dog, giving them a second chance with a beloved companion. He’s optimistic about the potential of Colossal and Viagen’s technology to help other families who have lost pets, and also to contribute to the preservation of endangered species.
As a huge animal lover, I was really touched by Tom Brady’s announcement about cloning his beloved dog, Lua. It’s amazing how far technology has come – now you can actually bring back a piece of a pet you’ve lost. For him and his family, Junie isn’t just a dog, she’s a way to keep Lua’s memory alive, and it’s just incredible to see that made possible through cloning.
