Toho, the studio behind the recent hit Godzilla Minus One, has announced another installment: Godzilla Minus Zero (also known as Godzilla -0.0). The announcement was made during the Godzilla Day celebration in Tokyo in 2025.
Takashi Yamazaki, the director and visual effects artist behind the first Academy Award-winning film in this long-running series, is back.
Title Revealed at Godzilla Day 2025
Toho revealed plans for a new Godzilla film during its yearly event, sharing a first look at the logo and artwork. The design features bold black and white brushstrokes, reminiscent of Minus One, and was even co-created by that film’s director, Yamazaki, suggesting a similar artistic style and realistic approach.
I’m so excited for this movie! They’re keeping the story under wraps for now, but I’ve heard it’s aiming for a worldwide release in late 2026. Apparently, they’re starting to film later this year, and they’re planning some amazing location shoots in both New Zealand and Norway. I can’t wait to see what they come up with!

Yamazaki Returns After Historic Success
Yamazaki once again handled the writing, directing, and visual effects, working with the teams at Shirogumi and Robot – the same group who brought Minus One to life.
Godzilla Minus One was a phenomenon:
- Made for around $15M
- Grossed $113M+ worldwide
- Became the highest-grossing Japanese live-action film in U.S. history
- Won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, beating Hollywood blockbusters with budgets 10x higher
This film was the first Godzilla movie to win an Academy Award, establishing the series as a critically acclaimed favorite for a new generation.

What to Expect From Godzilla Minus Zero
Toho is presenting this film as the latest installment in the “Minus” series. The title isn’t meant as a simple sequel number, but more as a countdown to complete devastation – a progression toward ‘Zero’ and total destruction (-3, -2, -1, then impact!).
While the actors and plot details are still secret, based on the emotional and intense story of Minus One, audiences can anticipate a gripping, character-focused drama alongside the spectacle of massive monsters.
