Takashi Yamazaki is returning to write, direct, and oversee the special effects for the next Godzilla film. Shirogumi will handle the visual effects, and production will be a collaboration between Toho Studios and Robot – the same team behind the successful 2023 movie, “Godzilla Minus One.” Toho Co., Ltd. will produce and distribute the film. This new project was initially hinted at about a year ago, and it’s now been officially announced.

Released in November 2023, “Godzilla Minus One” quickly became a huge hit. It grossed over 7.65 billion yen (approximately $50 million) in Japan, making it the highest-grossing live-action Japanese Godzilla film of all time.

The film earned $56 million in North America, making it the highest-grossing Japanese live-action movie ever. It also achieved a historic win at the 96th Academy Awards, taking home the Oscar for Best Visual Effects. This was the first time a “Godzilla” film had been nominated for an Academy Award, and the first time a Japanese film had won in that category.

Set in post-World War II Japan, “Godzilla Minus One” tells the story of Shikishima Koichi, a former kamikaze pilot played by Ryunosuke Kamiki, who is still struggling with the trauma of war and a previous encounter with Godzilla. When the monster returns, Koichi joins a team of soldiers determined to stop it from destroying Japan. The film also features performances by Minami Hamabe, Yuki Yamada, Munetaka Aoki, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Sakura Ando, and Kuranosuke Sasaki.

Toho, the studio behind Godzilla, is building on the success of “Minus One” with a new film titled “Godzilla -0.0.” The title hints at a fresh start for the Godzilla series. While details about the story and when it will be released are still unknown, fans are already eagerly anticipating the next chapter in the King of the Monsters’ adventures.
