As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of movie-watching under my belt, I must say that the announcement of another Toho Godzilla film has me absolutely thrilled! Having grown up watching the iconic Japanese monster on the silver screen, I can’t help but feel a surge of nostalgia every time a new installment is announced.
For over half a century, starting from 1954 up until 2004, Toho Studios consistently produced 28 films as part of their iconic Godzilla series within the Japanese film industry. However, this count excludes any other kaiju films they made during that same timeframe. Post-2004, Toho granted the rights to their characters to Legendary Pictures for their Monsterverse, but only produced two live-action films of their own. The 2016 film “Shin Godzilla” was a significant change in direction and was not expected to have a direct sequel. Yet, the upcoming 2023 film “Godzilla Minus One” seems set to revitalize the franchise with grandeur.
EMERGENCY ANNOUNCEMENT

Toho has confirmed (as reported by Deadline) that a new installment in the award-winning reboot series is forthcoming. In a quick Twitter video titled “Emergency Announcement,” Toho revealed that they have given the go-ahead for a continuation of Minus One, with original writer, director, and VFX supervisor Takashi Yamazaki set to return. The trio earned deserved Academy Awards for their groundbreaking work on the low-budget giant monster movie, an achievement all the more impressive given that they accomplished it with only a fraction of the budget and personnel compared to industry giants like Marvel and Paramount.
The film titled “Godzilla Minus One” was a huge international success, especially considering current Japanese movie standards. Globally, it generated a revenue of $116 million, which may seem relatively small compared to U.S. blockbusters, but for non-U.S. films, this is a colossal accomplishment.
In the conclusion of “Godzilla Minus One”, a hint was given that the monster king could return. At this point, it remains uncertain whether the following film will be set a few years or even decades after the initial one. The movie “Minus One” primarily explored the post-WWII period when Japan’s national identity was fragmented. In these times, the people had to unite against Godzilla instead of relying on government help. It’s questionable if another film set in the late ’40s or early ’50s would make sense, or if Yamazaki will introduce new characters and settings. As we wait for more information, we’re eager to discover what lies ahead!
