This week, Hulu viewers are really into scary, thought-provoking horror movies and familiar action series. The most popular titles on the platform right now are a mix of brand new originals and classic favorites that keep attracting big audiences. These films – ranging from spooky countryside thrillers to funny takes on everyday suburban life – are topping the charts thanks to their intense stories, nostalgic appeal, and often, a touch of dark humor.
‘The Ritual Killer’ (2023)

Detective Boyd, close to retirement and haunted by personal loss, teams up with an African studies professor to hunt a serial killer who’s using ancient rituals in their crimes. Their investigation quickly plunges them into a dangerous world of international crime and unsettling beliefs, as they race to stop a series of gruesome murders. The thriller features Cole Hauser and Morgan Freeman.
‘Resident Evil’ (2002)

Inspired by the ‘Resident Evil’ video games, this movie centers on an elite military team battling a dangerously powerful computer that has gone rogue. They’re sent into a hidden underground lab where an accident has transformed the staff into zombies. The main character, Alice, wakes up with no memory of who she is and teams up with the soldiers to stop a deadly virus from spreading. It’s a thrilling mix of science fiction and horror that launched a successful film series.
‘The Equalizer’ (2014)

Robert McCall is a highly skilled ex-operative who disappeared from his old life and now lives anonymously in Boston. When he discovers a young girl is being threatened by dangerous Russian mobsters, he’s forced to come out of hiding and use his special talents to help her. ‘The Equalizer,’ starring Denzel Washington, is a thrilling action movie that examines themes of righting wrongs and what it means to be just.
‘RED 2’ (2013)

Okay, so I’m a huge fan of these movies! Basically, ‘RED 2’ brings back Frank Moses, this retired CIA guy, and he has to get the old team back together. There’s a missing, super dangerous nuclear weapon out there, and they’re the only ones who can find it. It’s a wild ride all over Europe – London, Paris, Moscow – as they fight off a ton of assassins and some really corrupt people in power, all while trying to prove they’re not the bad guys. It’s packed with action, but it’s also really funny, and the cast – Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, everyone – is amazing!
‘Superbad’ (2007)

‘Superbad’ is a classic teen comedy about two inseparable high school seniors, Seth and Evan, trying to have one last epic night before they go off to different colleges. Their plan to get alcohol for a party leads to a wild and funny series of mishaps involving unusual police officers and plenty of suburban chaos. At its heart, the movie is a story about the strong friendship between Seth and Evan as they grapple with the changes that lie ahead, and it’s known for its memorable lines and realistic portrayal of growing up.
‘Son in Law’ (1993)

‘Son in Law’ is a funny movie about a college student who brings her quirky best friend from the city home to her family’s farm for Thanksgiving. Pauly Shore plays the friend, Crawl, who struggles to fit into the slower pace and traditional values of rural South Dakota. While his unusual behavior causes some problems at first, he ultimately helps the family work through their issues. The movie is a classic ‘fish-out-of-water’ story, highlighting the differences between city and country life.
‘Bad Moms’ (2016)

‘Bad Moms’ is a funny and relatable comedy about Amy, a mom pushed to her limit who decides to throw the rule book out the window. She joins forces with two other overwhelmed mothers to challenge the seemingly perfect parents at their kids’ school, leading to a showdown with the PTA president. The movie playfully explores the pressures faced by modern mothers.
‘RED’ (2010)

Frank Moses, a retired black-ops agent, is forced back into action when deadly assassins disrupt his quiet life. He gathers his former team to discover who is after them, leading them on a mission to infiltrate the CIA and expose a large-scale government conspiracy. During their dangerous, cross-country investigation, they unexpectedly team up with an ordinary woman. The film ‘RED’ is based on the popular comic book series of the same name and became a box office hit.
‘The Toxic Avenger’ (2025)

This new version of the 1984 cult film tells the story of Winston Gooze, a struggling janitor who gains incredible strength after an accident involving toxic waste. He then becomes the Toxic Avenger, determined to battle corrupt businesses. Starring Peter Dinklage, the movie embraces the original film’s darkly comedic style and offers a modern spin on the superhero genre, with a message about protecting the environment.
‘Together’ (2025)

‘Together,’ directed by Michael Shanks, is a scary and unsettling film that blends supernatural horror with body horror. It centers on a couple who move to the countryside hoping for a quiet life, but their peace is shattered when a strange and powerful force starts to warp their world and change them both physically and mentally. Dave Franco and Alison Brie play the couple as they fight to survive a series of increasingly strange occurrences. The movie uses this unusual story to examine ideas about connection and loneliness.
