Todd Howard is beginning to discuss the possibility of an Elder Scrolls television series, and fans are eagerly listening.
Following the success of the Amazon Fallout show, many fans wondered if Bethesda might adapt The Elder Scrolls, their popular fantasy series, for television. In a recent interview with Eurogamer, Todd Howard didn’t directly answer, but he explained why Fallout was a more logical choice for their first TV project.
I was reading Eurogamer the other day, and they interviewed Howard right before the new season of Fallout dropped. They asked about an Elder Scrolls TV show, and he basically said Fallout took years to get made, so they’re taking their time with anything else.
He explained that developing the Fallout series felt like a decade-long process. Following Fallout 3, there was significant interest in adapting the game into a movie or TV show, but they wanted to take the time to do it right. According to Eurogamer, Howard wouldn’t commit to a potential Elder Scrolls adaptation, but he believed Fallout was a better fit for television and had a richer story to tell within its genre.
Howard acknowledged the popularity of the Fallout TV show has prompted him to consider adapting other properties. He stated the show’s surprisingly large impact on the Fallout franchise makes him wonder about future possibilities, but he’s not currently planning anything new and is comfortable saying ‘no’ to new projects for the next ten years. He doesn’t seem to be in a hurry to commit to anything at the moment.
The show’s momentum isn’t stopping anytime soon. A third season is already in the works, and the actors appear eager to keep going for many years. Aaron Moten, who plays Maximus, revealed to IGN in May that the writers have a detailed, long-term vision for the story.
He mentioned that when he agreed to join the show, he was told both where the story would begin and roughly where it would end – around the fifth or sixth season. He also clarified that the writers always planned for the characters’ stories to develop gradually over time.
Because the Fallout TV series is expected to last a long time, Bethesda probably won’t start working on a TV show based on The Elder Scrolls for a while. Perhaps after Fallout concludes, they’ll turn their attention to Tamriel. Fans are also hoping that The Elder Scrolls 6 will be released by then, too.
