As a lifelong Jackson 5 fan, I can’t help but feel a deep sense of sadness and loss at the passing of Tito Jackson. Growing up with their music was like growing up with my own family, and Tito was the eldest brother who set the tone for all that followed. From his humble beginnings in Gary, Indiana, to becoming a pillar of the music industry, Tito’s story is one of perseverance, talent, and love.
It’s sad to say that Tito Jackson, a member of the famous pop band Jackson 5 along with his late brother Michael Jackson, has passed away at the age of 70. This unfortunate news was shared on Michael’s official Instagram account by his children. The caption on the post read, “We deeply mourn the loss of our beloved father, Tito Jackson.
They also conveyed deep sorrow and disbelief upon learning of their father’s unexpected passing. Many recognize him as Tito Jackson or Coach Tito, yet to his children, he was affectionately known as Poppa T – a truly remarkable individual who always prioritized the well-being of others.
Tito was the oldest of the Jackson siblings, with Rebbie and Jackie preceding him, and Jermaine, La Toya, Marlon, Brandon (who lived only briefly), Michael, Randy, and Janet following in succession. The children wrote, “Please remember to practice what our father always advocated for: ‘Love One Another.’ We love you Pops,” signing the message. In simpler terms, the children penned down this statement.
1953 saw the birth of Toriano Adaryll Jackson, who later became renowned as a musician and played a pivotal role in establishing the Jackson 5. In an old interview with Entertainment Weekly, Tito reminisced about how his father noticed and nurtured his third-born’s passion for music.
One time, when Joe Jackson, the family patriarch, noticed Tito strumming a guitar, he told him not to touch it anymore. In a fit of frustration one day, Tito snapped the string without knowing quite how to handle it. It was then that his father gently guided him to sit down, took the guitar onto his lap and said, “Now, demonstrate what you’ve learned.
Recognizing the talent within my offspring, I brought Jackie, Jermaine, Marlon, and of course, Michael together to form a musical group. In 1968, we signed with Motown Records, catapulting us to instant fame. Tito was our guitarist and backup vocalist, contributing his skills to hits such as I Want You Back, ABC, and I’ll Be There.
The deceased musician was married to Delores “Dee Dee” Martes and had three sons, named Taj, Taryll, and TJ. Together with their brothers, they formed the band 3T in 1995. He leaves behind his three sons, seven siblings, and mother Katherine.
