Timothée Chalamet recounted a scary incident that happened while filming Josh Safdie’s new movie, Marty Supreme. He told Robert Downey Jr. during a recent event in New York that a background actor actually threatened him on set during the filming of a motel scene, as reported by People magazine.
I thought it was really cool that the scene had a lot of people who weren’t professional actors – it makes things feel more real, but it can also be tricky. There was this one moment where I was right up close to this guy, really trying to provoke him, to get a reaction. I kept telling Josh, the director, ‘He’s just not getting mad at me!’ It was a funny situation, honestly.
After repeated takes, the extra finally lost his patience. Timothée Chalamet remembered the man saying, “I just spent 30 years in jail. You don’t want to mess with me, and you definitely don’t want to see me get angry!” Chalamet, clearly surprised, turned to the director, Josh, and asked, “Who is that guy?” with a nervous laugh.
Marty Supreme follows Marty Mauser, portrayed by Timothée Chalamet, as he pursues his ambition to become a world champion in table tennis. The movie is based on the inspiring story of Marty Reisman, a real-life table tennis star who earned five world championship medals.
Timothée Chalamet has already received awards for his performance, including from the Critics’ Choice Awards and the Golden Globes, and a nomination from the Screen Actors Guild. In his Golden Globes acceptance speech, he shared a valuable lesson his father taught him: the importance of gratitude. He explained that his father always encouraged him to appreciate what he had, which helped him handle both wins and losses gracefully. He admitted that while being grateful for just being nominated always helped, winning this time felt especially rewarding.
This story offers a unique look at the surprising challenges actors encounter during filming, even when working alongside people who aren’t professional performers.
