As a dedicated follower and admirer of Timothée Chalamet‘s career, I find his journey through Hollywood deeply inspiring. His recent conversation with Zane Lowe about feeling pigeonholed resonates profoundly with me, as it mirrors the struggles faced by many artists in the industry.
Timothée Chalamet recently shared with Zane Lowe his experiences feeling restricted in Hollywood due to his appearance. During a conversation about his upcoming Bob Dylan biopic, “A Complete Unknown,” Chalamet expressed that he has occasionally felt typecast, a situation he believes mirrors aspects of Dylan’s life story.
Drawing from his acting background, Chalamet recalled a tale from his younger days when his agency suggested him to build muscle to secure better roles in Hollywood. Previously, he shared that during his early career, he frequently auditioned for popular franchises such as The Maze Runner and Divergent, and often received feedback centered on his physique.
Despite the agent’s advice not seeming rude, there was a subtle implication of body-shaming related to typical Hollywood body standards. Reflecting on the story, the Little Women star stated, “If I had auditioned for The Maze Runner or Divergent, and similar roles that were popular during my rise, the feedback was consistently, ‘You don’t fit the desired physical profile.’
Chalamet went on to say, “An agent of mine phoned me and advised, ‘You need to gain some weight,’ in a non-pushy manner, if you catch my drift.” At the time, this advice seemed strange to him, but now he recognizes it was instrumental in helping him empathize with Dylan’s early career challenges.
Gradually, he carved his own path with critically acclaimed indie films such as Beautiful Boy, Lady Bird, and others, including Call Me By Your Name and Little Women. This success allowed Timothée Chalamet to avoid relying on typical blockbuster roles for his big break.
Marty Supreme pondered the potential struggles Dylan may have faced, who aspired to be a rock ‘n’ roll star originally. He remarked, “I managed to break into movies with a highly individualized approach. For Dylan, it was folk music. He couldn’t maintain a rock ‘n’ roll band because other kids with more money would constantly hire them away in Minnesota. So, for me, it was about discovering a unique cinematic style.
Currently, Timothée Chalamet’s acting career is thriving and has made him a well-known figure in the Hollywood industry. He has been given prominent roles in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune series and the musical adaptation of Wonka, and according to Deadline, he has amassed an impressive personal box office gross exceeding 2.5 billion USD. On Christmas Day, A Complete Unknown, a Bob Dylan biopic directed by James Mangold, will be released.
