‘Time for Everyone Else To Join In’: Cynthia Erivo Encourages Wicked Fans To Sing Along In Movie Theaters, Says It Would Be ‘Wonderful’

As a die-hard fan of musicals who has spent countless hours belting out show tunes in my living room, I wholeheartedly agree with Cynthia Erivo and Dwayne Johnson’s stance on audience participation during theater performances! The energy that fills a room when everyone sings along to their favorite songs is simply unmatched.

Cynthia Erivo, who played Elphaba in the recent Wicked film adaptation, voiced her thoughts on the ongoing online discussion about whether viewers should behave or join in singing popular Wicked musical numbers. During a chat with NBC at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on November 28th, she addressed this topic.

She’s happy with the decision and thinks it’s about time for others to get involved too. It’s fantastic,” Erivo said, echoing a similar sentiment shared by Dwayne Johnson. By expressing her positive viewpoint in this manner, she has added herself to the growing list of celebrities taking a supportive stance.

The actor from Jumanji urged spectators to join in the singing experience while watching the movie, Moana 2. “Go ahead and sing! You’ve spent your earned money on a ticket for a musical, and now you’re immersed in it. Sing along,” he suggested.

Theater audiences joining in while watching the musical Wicked ignited discussions online due to some viewers finding the noise bothersome. In an interview with Variety, AMC Theatre representative Ryan Noonan explained their reason for requesting silence during screenings: “AMC has a long-standing rule against disruptive behavior.

Additionally, he emphasized the importance of the Wicked pre-show message, which serves as a friendly reminder to all cinema-goers to respect each other’s movie-watching experience by avoiding unnecessary disruptions during the film. This sentiment was widely supported, with many expressing their approval and even criticizing those who caused disturbances within the theater environment.

Another Wicked theater misconduct that recently created a buzz was that of fans filming the movie on their phones. It was opposed by theater owners, deeming it as illegal.

Despite the challenges, Erivo and Grande have devised a plan: They’ll be hosting engaging sing-a-long screenings of Wicked, debuting on Christmas Day. Over 1,000 North American cinemas are said to be part of this event.

The movie “Wicked,” directed by John M. Chu, narrates the tale of Elphaba (Erivo), a witch who’s often misunderstood due to her green skin and an evolving bond with the well-liked and ‘good’ witch, Glinda (Grande). Following an encounter with the Wonderful Wizard of Oz, their friendship experiences a crucial turning point, as suggested by the plot summary.

Wicked is available in theaters.
