Tim Curry shared some stories about working with Tom Cruise on the 1986 fantasy movie Legend.
In his recently released memoir, Vagabond, the actor reflected on a past project and shared that his experience working with a young Tom Cruise wasn’t quite what he anticipated.
Curry recalled seeing Tom Cruise in Risky Business before they worked together, and he felt Cruise was perfectly cast as the charming, rebellious young character. He wrote that he thought Cruise played the role flawlessly, portraying a cute and innocent young rebel.
When we finally worked together on a film, he was pleasant and easygoing. However, he was a bit of an enigma, and I never quite got to know him fully. We always got along, but I didn’t really understand what others found so captivating about him.
The actor, known for roles in The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Scary Movie 2, confessed he wasn’t impressed with Tom Cruise like many others were. He wasn’t a fan and actually felt anxious about working with him before they started filming.
Curry also observed how dedicated Cruise was to his craft. He remembered that Cruise went to great lengths to get into character, even asking to sleep on the snow-covered set so he could fully immerse himself in the environment.
Playing the frightening villain Darkness required Curry to spend around six hours daily getting makeup and prosthetics applied. This limited the amount of time he could interact with Tom Cruise and the other actors on set.
I didn’t have a lot of interaction with Tom Cruise, likely because the movie wasn’t the kind where the cast hung out and chatted. Ridley Scott didn’t encourage that kind of atmosphere, and my extensive prosthetic makeup made it difficult to socialize – I couldn’t even go for a drink before having my horns and hooves taken off, for example. By the time filming wrapped, all I wanted to do was go straight home to bed.
Although Curry and the colleague weren’t particularly close, Curry finished their working relationship with a good impression. He said, “We didn’t really get to know each other, but I ultimately found him to be a thoughtful and considerate person, and I appreciated that.”
In his memoir, Vagabond, Stephen Curry openly shares what it was like filming Legend, revealing that even when working alongside another major star, actors can have vastly different experiences.
