Tim Burton Reveals Alec Baldwin And Geena Davis Didn’t Join As Returning Stars In Beetlejuice 2 For THIS Reason

As a devoted fan who has grown up with Tim Burton’s enchanting cinematic universe, I must admit that the upcoming Beetlejuice sequel has me absolutely spellbound. The return of Winona Ryder, Michael Keaton, and Catherine O’Hara is like a magical reunion of old friends, but the absence of Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis leaves a peculiar void in my heart.

The movie “Beetlejuice” is generating buzz even before its theatrical debut, having received tremendous acclaim at its premiere at the Venice Film Festival. Notable cast members like Winona Ryder, Michael Keaton, and Catherine O’Hara are reprising their roles from the 1988 original film “Beetlejuice”. Interestingly, Tim Burton, who directed both films, chose not to include Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis’ characters Adam Maitland and Barbara Maitland in the sequel for a particular reason.

In a recent discussion, I learned about Tim’s reasons for not including Alec and Geena in the Beetlejuice sequel, along with Jeffrey Jones, who originally played Charles Deetz. The original movie featured Michael Keaton and Geena Davis as the deceased couple, unable to leave their home and causing mischief for the new family, the Deetz family.

During a recent discussion, Tim candidly explained his reasons for excluding Alec, Geena, and Jeffrey Jones from the Beetlejuice sequel. Besides them, Jones did not reappear to reenact his character as Charles Deetz. In the original film, Michael Keaton and Geena Davis portrayed a deceased couple who couldn’t depart from their home and continually haunted the new family – the Deetz family, who resided in their stead.

In the classic movie “Beetlejuice,” which was released in 1988, the Deetz family – Charles Deetz (played by Jones), Delia Jones (portrayed by Catherine O’Hara), and their daughter Lydia Jones (Winona Ryder) were featured. Michael Keaton took on the role of Beetlejuice, the ghost character, in this horror-comedy and is set to reprise his part in the upcoming sequel. However, during an interview with People, director Tim Burton explained why original characters Alec and Geena were not a part of “Beetlejuice 2.”

Tim explained that instead of merely checking off boxes, he chose to focus on something else for this sequel. The primary factor attracting him was the portrayal of three generations – mother, daughter, and granddaughter. He also mentioned that if he had attempted making it in 1989 or earlier, he wouldn’t have been able to create the story centered around this theme.

As an over-the-moon fan, I can’t contain my excitement for “Beetlejuice 2”! This time around, the spotlight is on Lydia’s family, particularly her headstrong daughter, Astrid (Jenna Ortega). The story unfolds as Lydia and her mother, Delia, find themselves back at Winter River following a heart-wrenching event. The sequel promises to delve deep into their compelling narrative.

A few months ago, Entertainment Tonight inquired about Geena Davis reprising her role as Barbara Maitland. In response, Davis clarified that she wouldn’t be returning to the role. She explained, “Apparently I was supposed to? Well, let me tell you something… My belief is that ghosts don’t grow older. And I haven’t, but not because of that! You see, our characters remain frozen in time since their death, so it’s been quite a while since we last saw each other.”
