As a long-time fan of Tim Allen and the Toy Story franchise, I find myself eagerly anticipating his return as Buzz Lightyear in Toy Story 5. It’s fascinating to witness the evolution of characters we’ve grown up with, and seeing Allen breathe life into Buzz once more is like revisiting an old friend after a long absence.
Tim Allen is gearing up to reprise his role as Buzz Lightyear in the upcoming movie, Toy Story 5, slated for release on June 19, 2026. The actor has been sharing behind-the-scenes insights and his excitement about working on this iconic character once more.
In a recent interview promoting his new sitcom, Allen revealed that he’s already started voice work for the film. “I just did the first five-hour session for Buzz,” he said, describing it as both exciting and a little challenging. “It’s weird getting back into it, but I feel so lucky to be Buzz Lightyear.”
Allen highly commended the screenplay, describing it as both smart and inventive. He noted that the narrative is remarkably clever, and went on to say that the quality of the script was a major factor in its production, along with the decision to invite him and Tom Hanks back for another round. Although specifics about the plot remain secret, Allen suggested that the upcoming film promises something unique and exceptional.
Speaking on resuming his character, Allen acknowledged it required some exertion. “Initially, it was quite challenging, but roughly two hours in, I felt like Buzz once more. There’s still a significant amount of work ahead,” he stated, implying that further recording sessions are planned as the narrative unfolds further.
Since the debut of the first “Toy Story” movie in 1995, the series has significantly contributed to Allen’s career as he voiced Buzz Lightyear throughout all four main movies. However, he was absent from the 2022 spinoff titled “Lightyear,” where Chris Evans portrayed the astronaut who inspired the toy character. Now, Allen is collaborating with Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks) for another exciting journey in “Toy Story 5.
According to writer Andrew Stanton, the upcoming film promises a fresh, thrilling take on the story, combining toys with technology. During the D23 Expo, he shared this intriguing statement: “This time, it’s about toys meeting tech!” He also mentioned that viewers can expect an enjoyable ride and that they are eager for everyone to witness this exciting new chapter.
For the time being, enthusiasts can watch the initial four Toy Story movies that are currently available on Disney+ streaming service. Meanwhile, it seems Allen is quite thrilled about future projects as he shared, “It’s an excellent tale, folks. It’s truly exceptional.
