On Friday, we’ll receive advance box office figures for Marvel’s Thunderbolts or New Avengers, and they are projected to rank as the fourth-lowest among all MCU films. This aligns with the film’s underperformance throughout the week and during its opening weekend.
On Fridays, the movie’s performance surpasses that of “Captain America: Brave New World,” “The Marvels,” and “Quantumania.”

What is the Friday box office?
Via Deadline, the site reports the Thunderbolts / New Avengers Friday box office is $9 million.
The earnings surpassed those of “Captain America: Brave New World” on a Friday (which was $7.28 million), as well as “The Marvels” and “Quantumania” (with $2.76 million and $8.33 million respectively) on their respective box office days.
On the other hand, its second Friday box office was less than what Shang-Chi earned during the same day, which, when adjusted for inflation, equals approximately $11,363,216 in current dollar terms.
As a movie enthusiast, I must admit that the box office earnings of both “Eternals” ($7,839,828, which is approximately $9.21 million in today’s dollars) and “Black Widow” ($8M, or around $9.44 million in today’s dollars) pale in comparison to the movies I hold dear.
It’s also lower than 2015’s Ant-Man ($7,252,683, or $9.78M in today’s dollars).
What about the second weekend estimates?
It’s possible that the deadline is being optimistic, as projections suggest that “Thunderbolts/New Avengers” could see a 53% decrease in earnings during its second weekend, meaning it might earn approximately $35 million, down from its opening weekend earnings.
To clarify, Shang-Chi’s second Friday earnings totaled $9,628,206, leading to a $34.7 million gross for the weekend (without accounting for inflation). If Thunderbolts follows a similar pattern, it’s estimated to generate approximately $32 million over the weekend, representing a decrease of about 55.96%.
Over the weekend following Friday, the success of the box office will hinge on whether audiences choose to watch the film on both Saturday and Sunday. Since there’s no significant competition, predictions can swing either positively or negatively. The movie isn’t flawless but has plenty of exciting scenes that make it worth watching.
Over the weekend, it looks like my favorite superhero crew in Thunderbolts or New Avengers will have some stiff competition with Final Destination: Bloodlines. However, come next week, they’ll unfortunately be no match for Disney’s live-action remake of Lilo & Stitch. To top it all off, Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible is set to leave them in the dust as well!
The combined budget of Thunderbolts/New Avengers movies amounts to approximately $300 million, and since Captain America: Brave New World, which also had a similar budget, has been underperforming as Disney confirmed that Cap 4 is a flop, it’s not looking promising for the success of Thunderbolts/New Avengers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Here are MCU second weekend grosses of comparable movies:
- Captain America: Brave New World: $28,170,093
- The Marvels: $10,120,589
