THUNDERBOLTS* Director Jake Schreier May Direct the MCU X-MEN Reboot

It’s looking likely that director Jake Schreier could helm the upcoming reboot of the X-Men series from Marvel Studios. Following the acclaim of his work on Thunderbolts*/New Avengers, a recent report by Deadline suggests that Schreier is Marvel’s top pick for the role. If confirmed, this would mark the first new X-Men film since 2019’s Dark Phoenix; though one might argue that New Mutants could also be included in that timeline. Last year, it was announced that screenwriter Michael Lesslie would pen the script for this project, and it appears that work is still ongoing. Given the Thunderbolts’ status as outcasts and underdogs, Schreier seems an excellent fit for the X-Men’s material.

From what we currently understand, very little is known about the upcoming X-Men film, except that it’s slated to release following Avengers: Secret Wars. Characters from the original X-Men films featured in Avengers: Doomsday are anticipated to make an appearance, which many fans believe will mark the end of this specific X-Men team. Whatever follows will likely be a fresh take on Marvel’s mutants. However, it’s reasonable to expect that familiar faces like Charles Xavier, Cyclops, Storm, and Jean Grey, among others, may reappear. It’s challenging to envision an X-Men reboot without these iconic characters. The only original cast member who might return is Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, given his strong association with the role. These are all just hypotheses at this point.

As a diehard Marvel fan, I can’t help but speculate about the potential future of mutant-centric stories in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, following the events of “Secret Wars.” While these rumors have yet to be officially confirmed, they’ve sparked quite a buzz among us comic book enthusiasts.

If these rumors prove true, we might be treated to a standalone X-Men film, serving as the foundation for a universe teeming with mutant characters. Beyond the students at Professor Xavier’s school, we could see paramilitary squads like X-Force in action. For those who prefer gritty detective tales, there’s X-Factor, and for fans of the bizarre and interdimensional, Excalibur promises to be a mind-bending journey.

In the vast tapestry of Marvel Comics, mutants have their own rich world to explore. Even cosmic entities like the Starjammers, who share ties with the X-Men, could potentially fill the void left by the Guardians of the Galaxy. When it comes to Marvel’s mutant characters, the possibilities are as limitless as the cosmos itself!
