Thunderbolts* Defies Box Office Odds: MCU’s Latest Hit Shows Impressive Staying Power

In its second weekend, Marvel Cinematic Universe’s new film, Thunderbolts*, managed a remarkable $33.1 million at U.S. box offices. This impressive showing places it as the 13th lowest drop in earnings for an MCU film and the fourth best performance since COVID-19, demonstrating its continued success.

The decrease was only 55.5%, which indicates that the film kept more viewers than many contemporary superhero movies did during their second week.

Compared to its initial release, the drop-off in viewership was minimal at just 55.5%, a testament to the film’s strong audience retention compared to other recent superhero films.

Among the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films, Thunderbolts is unique due to its more moderate decrease in viewership during its second weekend. Contrastingly, Thor: Love and Thunder suffered a substantial 67.7% drop, followed by Multiverse of Madness and No Way Home, which both experienced a 67% and 67.5% decline respectively in their second weekends.

Conversely, it’s worth noting that Black Panther continues to outshine other Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) titles in this aspect, experiencing only a modest drop of 44.7%.

A substantial part of the movie’s achievement is due to the powerful acting delivered by the entire cast, with Florence Pugh receiving a lot of accolades for her role as Yelena Belova, which has garnered much positive attention.

The movie has gained additional support due to favorable word-of-mouth and an enthusiastic fan community eager to witness the fresh group interactions in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The current U.S. earnings for the movie “Thunderbolts” amount to $128.4 million, and predictions estimate it could rise to anywhere between $195 million and $210 million within the country. This places it in a similar financial bracket as other successful Marvel Cinematic Universe ensemble films. For comparison, here’s how it stacks up against recent MCU titles:

* “Avengers: Endgame” – $858 million (domestic)
* “Avengers: Infinity War” – $678.8 million (domestic)
* “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” – $389.8 million (domestic)
* “Captain Marvel” – $426.8 million (domestic)
* “Spider-Man: Far From Home” – $390.6 million (domestic)

While it’s still early, “Thunderbolts” is showing promising signs of joining the ranks of these successful MCU team-ups.
