Throwback to When Elton John Reflected on His Not-So ‘PG-13’ Past Through His Rocketman Biopic as Singer Loses His Eyesight

As a lifestyle expert reflecting on Elton John‘s extraordinary journey, I find his transformation from a career-focused artist to a more introspective individual truly inspiring. His decision to approve the Rocketman biopic showcases his courage and willingness to share his life story honestly, even if it means depicting some of its darker moments.

As Elton John grew older, his attitude towards reflecting on his career shifted from reluctance to embracement. In an article published by The Guardian, this musical legend shared detailed insights about his remarkable life and what ultimately led him to approve the production of the 2019 Rocketman biopic.

In a recent writing, he expressed that his focus lies on what’s coming up next rather than reminiscing about the past four decades. However, as he grew older, this perspective shifted slightly. John further mentioned that becoming a father for the first time at 63 (Zachary) and then again at 65 (Elijah) prompted him to reflect on his life. He shared that he began contemplating what his life might look like or read about in forty years from now.

Over time, he grew less secretive about aspects of his personal life, eventually agreeing to the 2019 biopic Rocketman. In this film, Taron Egerton portrayed a younger version of him. When he and his team commissioned the script from Lee Hall – a collaborator with whom he had worked on the stage musical Billy Elliot – they were delightfully surprised.

In a post, the “I’m Still Standing” singer expressed that it was exceptional, combining scenes of pure whimsy with moments that were incredibly raw and uncompromising – no sugarcoating involved. He reminisced about certain scenes that were quite disturbing and unpleasant, but they accurately portrayed aspects of his real life.

John disclosed that certain production studios requested them to reduce explicit sexual scenes and drug references in the movie to secure a PG-13 rating. However, he expressed, “I didn’t live a life suitable for a PG-13 rating. I didn’t aim for a film overflowing with drugs and sex, but at the same time, it’s no secret that I had my share of both during the ’70s and ’80s.

To him, it seemed unusual for the on-screen Elton John to retire quietly to his hotel room after a performance, drink warm milk, and read Gideon’s Bible before bed. Yet, he was also keen to avoid a biopic that was overly straightforward and stripped of its fantastical elements, as he often immersed himself in his imagination during his upbringing.

Lately, it was disclosed by the Grammy winner that he has been blind in his right eye for about four months due to an infection. He mentioned this during a recent interview on Good Morning America, stating, “I’ve been without sight for nearly four months now, and my left eye isn’t perfect either.
