The music played inside Kmart stores is a fun mix of things – classic Christmas carols played softly on instruments, alongside some wonderfully corny old Kmart commercials. You’ll also hear store employees calling for security, likely due to shoplifting during the busy holiday season! Strangely, there’s even a recording reminding people that smoking wasn’t allowed on the sales floor – except at the snack bar! It’s a reminder that things weren’t always better in the past. Another video takes you back to a Kmart Christmas in 1991, and it’s just as delightfully cheesy.
These days, most of us do our holiday shopping online. The days of battling crowds for popular toys, like Cabbage Patch Kids, are largely over. As a result, many department stores have closed, becoming relics of the past. Even K-Mart, once found in almost every town, has nearly disappeared – with only one store remaining in the continental U.S., located in Florida. It’s unlikely they still play background music for shoppers, but it would be incredible if an employee decided to play a 1974 playlist, instantly transporting everyone back in time. That would truly feel like a holiday miracle.
