In a nutshell, the remastered version of Oblivion seems to be packed with cool Easter eggs, but unfortunately, this particular one doesn’t quite measure up.
I hold no grudge towards my friends at PC Gamer for drawing my attention to the Oblivion Remastered Easter egg, which has also revived a cringe-worthy meme from 2011. It’s really that early 2010s absurdist humor popular among Millennials that I blame. I recall chuckling insincerely to countless instances of it during my college years. The Harlem Shake and the screaming sheep come to mind, and I consider the 2011 video Potion Seller as equally laughable in the same vein.
Apologies, fellow Gen Zers, for the temporal shift, but to keep things interesting with our tale, let’s journey back to 2011 and catch up on something together.
I must confess that I hadn’t watched this video until now, or if I had, I don’t recall it. Perhaps that’s why it doesn’t resonate with me; I’m not viewing it through rose-tinted glasses, reminiscing about rowdy parties where beer pong games ended in overturned tables and I couldn’t hear the video due to all the noise. Oh my, goodness.
Reflecting on it, the Potion Seller meme stands out as a particularly inventive representation of the humor from that specific era. However, there’s no denying its undeniable association with that time. Although I may not find current memes superior, I wouldn’t want to revisit the past for them either.
To clarify, I’m raising this topic as Oblivion Remastered appears to contain a nod towards the character Potion Seller. Twitch streamer TerraGuildTV stumbled upon a novel console command titled “Altar.Player.PotionSellerGiveMeYourStrongestPotions”. The name is quite straightforward, but what makes it intriguing is its description:
“Gives the player the strongest potions that Potion Seller has to offer.”
This hints towards a possible connection or easter egg in the game.
Empowers the player by providing them with the tools necessary to overpower the approaching Roman forces aiming to conquer the final liberated village in Gaul. “By any chance, have you heard about my elixirs? …My elixirs are beyond your capability, traveler.
Indeed, it seems we’ve stumbled upon an Easter egg from Potion Seller for sure, and let me tell you, it’s quite fitting that the character in the meme appears to be mimicking the typical characters from The Elder Scrolls series.
Once again, well played Todd.
